There's a t-shirt that says "Catan: Destroying Friendships since 1995," which makes Catan fans knowingly laugh. This scenario actually encourages helpful behaviors, but don't worry die-hard gamers – that "goodwill" is just another route to your own victory! So-called "noble" behaviors include moving the robber harmlessly, giving away resource cards, and connecting networks. For doing these kind acts, you are rewarded with favor tokens that gain you advantages such as exchanging a resource card, gaining a resource card, building a road for free, gaining a development card or even extra victory points.

    Retail: $5.00
    Rainbow Price: $4.50

Have you ever had a game of Catan where the robber has simply refused to move from one of your most important resources? Ever built a road that led to nothingness, because an opponent built in a location first? Perhaps you needed a resource card that another player had, but who refused to trade it. Well, with Helpers of Catan, you can allay these concerns should you choose to add them into either the base game or Seafarers. Each of these helpers provides a special, minor bonus akin to the examples described above. Jean, for example, can mimic a 2:1 trade port for a turn. These helper cards provide a new layer of challenge to the game, but beware- your opponents will be using them for their own gain!

This is yet another intriguing expansion to the family of Settlers of Catan games. The premise and object is similar, but several new features are in this version. Players discover and settle islands, find exotic resources, build fleets, trade, and battle pirates in five playable scenarios. The first introduces new underlying concepts of this expansion, introducing fresh buildings and fleets. From here each scenario builds onto the last, adding new rules and content into the game. This gradually finalizes into the last "Explorers and Pirates" scenario (which contains all previously learned concepts).

In this easier-to-play version, the island of Catan is replaced by a string of islands where players build pirate hideouts instead of settlements and cities, and make ships to expand their borders. Players use the resources of wood, goats, molasses, and swords and collect gold. The robber is replaced by the dreaded Ghost Captain. Be the first to have 7 pirate hideouts and win! Games take 45-60 minutes for 2 - 4 players.

Now you can enjoy Catan with dice! A double-sided, color maps with score tracks features two different ways to play. Each sheet holds a map of Catan at the bottom and a building guide and scoring area at the top. The maps show a pre-set path of roads, settlements and cities, which have to be built in order, though you can choose different routes, and six knights around the outside. On the first scenario (which I favor!), each item to build is marked with a value of victory points that you receive for building it, with the values getting progressively higher as you move further around the map. Each player gets 15 turns to make as much progress as he can by rolling the six dice up to three times per turn in hopes of tossing the right combination of resources to build items. The second scenario has the same map but there are no values on the building items; the point system is the same as the board game, and you can also achieve largest army and longest road as you try to be the first player to reach 10 victory points. Includes 6 dice; pen/pencil for scoring not included. Also includes a QR code for playing directions. - Steph

The only downfall we have found in the original Settlers of Catan is that you can only play with 3-4 players. This expansion set solves that problem, thereby making it the perfect game! Eleven additional resource hexagons plus four more sea frame pieces combine with the original tiles and frame to make one larger game board, accommodating 5-6 players. Also included are more number tokens to place on the resource hexagons, two additional colored sets of wood pieces (roads, cities, and settlements), and additional resource and development cards. The box also contains a few new rules that will change up your game just a little bit. Please note that you need the original game in order to use this expansion.

Not quite a card game in the traditional sense, Rivals for Catan is more of a board game created and played with cards. Each player begins with a "principality" consisting of resource fields (ore, wool, hills, forest, gold, and grain), settlements (worth victory points and allow you to construct more buildings), and roads (which allow you to build additional settlements) which are organized in a grid-like fashion in front of him or her. Similar to the standard game, a die is rolled to determine which resources are produced at the beginning of each turn; however, an event die is also rolled, incurring brigand attacks, improved harvests, and more. Each player is also allowed an "action phase" to play building & action cards from their hand, which can give long-term and temporary bonuses; and build settlements, roads, and cities. Resources can also be traded to the bank, but not your opponent. The end goal is to have as many victory points as the given scenario calls for through settlements, cities, trade, and strength advantages. Three "themes" are included, each introducing new concepts and adding challenges to the game. Once players have mastered each theme, the scenario "The Duel of the Princes" can be played, incorporating all event cards and extending replayability even further! For 2 players. 45-60 minutes.

Unlike the regular edition of Catan, the Family Edition features a six-piece pre-arranged board (picture a really easy jigsaw puzzle) instead of separate tiles. Each double-sided piece features a different combination of resources & number values. The emphasis of this version is on simplicity and ease of understanding; the limited combinations available reduce the "random" factor intrinsic to Catan, but also make the game easier for kids or new players. It is faster to set up, there are always a certain number of "good first spots," and reduced variability makes the game more predictable and easier to catch on to. Additionally, it is worth noting that this version is stand-alone and not expandable with 5-6 player Catan extensions. For 3-4 players; game duration is 60-90 minutes.

In this clever expansion, the settlers take to the sea to explore and settle the Isles of Catan. Although similar to the original game, instead of one large island, there are now a combination of smaller islands on which to establish oneself. In order to navigate to different islands, each player now has wooden ships in addition to his usual settlements, cities, and roads. The instruction booklet contains nine different scenarios to choose from, each with a unique board construction and game objective, along with instructions for creating your own scenarios. Along with a few new rules, this expansion also introduces a new, coveted resource - gold - and the dreaded pirate ship. Although we certainly haven't tired of the original game yet, we enjoy the variation of this expansion every so often. 3-4 players.

Please note that you need the original game in order to use this expansion.

In this card-based adaptation of the popular game, up to four players attempt to win by getting ten victory points. However, several key mechanics are swapped in the change to a board-less game. Roads are used to trade resource cards, knights are used to take resource cards, and all building cards have certain abilities. Cities and city expansions also have events on them which change the game or help the player. If you're looking for a unique, mobile, and faster Catan game, perhaps this is for you.
