The best books written to entertain young children have to contain text that is somewhat interactive, an interesting storyline, and a problem situation that most children can identify. This book must have had all the ingredients, because it was one of our absolute favorites when we were very young. Throughout the book, Grover (of Sesame Street fame) continues to panic because the title suggests that there is going to be a monster waiting for him at the end of the book. He attempts various constructions to halt the "page-turning" that will inevitably bring the monster closer, and as the pages are turned, the book turns into a bigger and bigger mess. Of course, the end is a surprise for kids, and continues to delight them every time the story is read. If you don't have this Little Golden Book already, I highly recommend it - may yours become as dog-eared as ours! - Jess

For each table in this book, there is a picture puzzle to solve. You have to color all the areas which contain a number from the table. The puzzles are all different shapes and sizes. For example, in the 2x table picture puzzle, you color all of the numbers which divide by 2 to find the picture. For the square puzzle, you color all the numbers which are multiples of two to see the pattern. There are 16 picture puzzles plus 11 pattern puzzles. There are times tables for each puzzle from 1-12. A fun way to work through the multiplication tables. ~ Phyllis

Learn animal noises and more from this fun board book, detailed by the works of Eric Carle! All the barn animals want to play with the spider, but she’s so focused on building her web she doesn’t even notice them. One of my favorite parts about this book is the spider’s web: it’s coated with a special ink so it rises up from the page, just enough for little hands to be able to feel it. A fun little tactile flair to a simple story. 32 pages– Laura

If you were to hear me extol the virtues of this book to someone, the phrase that you would most likely hear would be, "You can't find books like this anymore!" And it is information that you are unlikely to learn even in Boy Scouts. Flipping randomly through the pages, I find things like: War Kites, How to Stock a Fresh-Water Aquarium, How To Make Puppets and Puppet Show, Practical Taxidermy for Boys, Traps and Trapping, and my personal favorite, Home-Made Hunting Apparatus (whip bow looking the coolest of these). It's contains the high-interest activities that an adult remembers doing in their childhood, and parents wish that their kids would get out-of-doors to try out. Also, it is handily divided into Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter activities, so they never have an excuse to stay inside and watch TV.

Of course, a 19th century book is going to have some outdated information and materials: it's hard to find a barrel stave these days. It also has 1800's regard for safety; were safety glasses even available back then? Since you're experimenting with whip bows and working with sharp glass for war kites I'm guessing you'll want some basic protection. This book also assumes a good deal of room for some activities: it is hard to build and sail a raft without some space.

But the shortcomings are few, with the outdated terms easily deciphered, old materials fairly substitutable, and a pair of work gloves and eye protection being all that most projects require in the way of safety. All in all, any boy who has some space and maybe a little parental guidance will have a blast all through the year with this book. It should give electronics a run for their money, and help kids remember that the outdoors is fun for any adventurous boy. As the author says in the preface: "Let boys make their own kites and bows and arrows; they will find double pleasure in them, and value them accordingly, to say nothing of the education involved in the successful construction of their home-made playthings." ~ Mark

Lena can recite the Scriptures by heart. Hoping to make her beloved papa proud of her and to make her white classmates notice her "Magic Mind" instead of her black skin, Lena vows to win the Bible-quoting contest, but winning does not bring Lena what she expects. Instead of honor, violence and death erupt and strike the one she loves most dearly. Lena, who has believed in vengeance, must now learn how to forgive. "A many-layered book. Ouida Sebestyen has wrapped story in poetry, wrapped me with it, too, caught me and held me, made me feel." - Cynthia King, The New York Times.

This title in the Wonders of Creation series dives into the ocean. Amazing is a good adjective for this book. Incredible is another. Awesome works pretty well, too. Let me just say that I am long past third grade, but I could spend a few more hours lifting every flap, pulling every tab, reading every speech bubble, and turning pages to find another pop-up mountain or volcano. This book is so much fun to look through; every page is chock full of information presented in an inspiring, unique, and entertaining way. Covered is our place in space, sunshine, continents and oceans, rivers and mountains, countries, Europe, natural disasters, world distances and traveling times, and inhabitants. Another cool feature is the pop-up globe, made from stiff card, which is flat in the book but pops into a more-or-less round globe - it's really quite something! It is attached to the book by an elastic cord, so it won't get lost either. Learning geography can be a lot of fun, especially when kids are enjoying themselves - and they really can't do anything but that when they open this hardcover book. ~ Zach

If you're looking for a Bible overview that is concise and gets right to the main points, check this one out. Each book is described in 2 to 4 pages, with major sections for Title and Style, GPS, Background and Detail. Title and Style gives an overview of the book, writer, and major points covered. GPS and Background provides information on the geographical, cultural, biographical, and historical references. The Detail section explains a few particulars from each book.

I found the text to be concise and well written, with interesting information that I had not heard before. For instance, in Matthew, the author Cris Rogers gives insights into the life of Herod the Great, both about his character and his accomplishments. One of the building projects was a man-made mountain, constructed for the sole purpose of putting a lavish palace called Herodium on it. Rogers makes the point about Jesus' statement in Matthew 21:21 "say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,'" Jesus may have been referring to this mountain and the power His disciples would have to bring down the evils of this world and throw them into the pits of hell.

The book also includes lots of color photographs and small maps that add interest and explain some of the text. At the end of the commentary on each book, additional books are suggested if you want to delve more deeply into the topics discussed.

I believe it would be well worth the few minutes of time that it takes to read the section on a book of the Bible before doing Bible reading for your own personal Bible study. It would also give you some great insights to wow your students if you are leading a study. 204 pgs, sc. ~ Bob

In this third book in the "Wonders of Creation" series, Dr. Morris explains the structure of the earth we live on and presents evidence and theories of rock and landform formation from a young-earth viewpoint. He includes interesting findings from Mt. St. Helens and other recent catastrophic events, discusses various methods of dating the earth, and presents possible scenarios for Creation and the Flood that fit with a literal interpretation of the Biblical account. The well illustrated and easy to read pages make this a good introduction for the younger student or for anyone who has not been exposed to an alternative to the "millions of years" of most geology texts. Grades 5 and up. ~ Reprinted from Christian Home Educators Curriculum Manuals with permission of Cathy Duffy, Grove Publishing.

The corresponding study guide would be a good tool for small group study and homeschool. Each chapter includes corresponding pages from the book, scripture passages, and questions to answer. There is also a list of vocabulary words to define and suggested activities for each chapter. You can start your own rock collection, make a fossil, and study erosion. This 44-page study guide is not reproducible. An answer key is included. 5" x 8", softcover. ~ Donna

An all around guide to creation science, I was impressed with the wide variety of subjects the book touches on. Using a fairly common question to start off each chapter, it then delves into various subjects for detailed answers. For example, the book starts off with the question, "Is There Really a God?" It then talks about how order is always taken as a sign of a creator and how information can't really rise from non information. The questions range from such creation-related topics as the doom of dinosaurs, gap & ruin reconstruction theory, distant starlight, why Christians shouldn't accept billions of years, and hybrid theories. The questions are approached scientifically, biblically, and logically. Clear, relatively concise answers mean that this book is kind of a crash course in Intelligent Design. While there are books that deal specifically with fossils, or specifically with hybrid creation/evolution theories, this is an excellent book to get you in the loop with creation science. Written by Ken Ham and various creation scientists, it is 378 pgs, softcover. A revised and updated edition of the Answers Book. ~ Mark

This maze book is filled with 50 intricate mazes - one for each of the United States. The cool thing about these mazes is that each is in the shape of a featured state. Capitals and large cities are labeled, and the actual maze is contained inside the outline of the state. Puzzlers must make their way from the state's capital to one of its major cities. The passages in the mazes are fairly thin and somewhat challenging, so older students won't be disappointed with overly-easy solutions. Answers are included at the end. 60 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel
