Around here, we like things that just work and get the job done, and are easy-to-use. I guess that's why we liked this product. It takes the time, frustration, and work out of creating endless paper timelines, or even using a blank one by letting you create it all on a computer, and than make as many copies as you need. Easy Timeline Creator gives the user a host of options and flexibility to create any sort of timeline. Basically, the program leads the user through a series of windows, through which they determine the title of their timeline, choose a starting and ending date, select the frequency and distance between the tick marks (years, decades, centuries, etc.). Once the basics have been settled, the user can check categories to be represented on the timeline, including literature, science, space, or different time periods or civilizations such as Greece, Rome, or the Middle Ages. Selecting these will place an item in the timeline with a special icon in front of it to clearly designate it as a development or event in that category. Then you're ready to add events. To add an event, just type it in, add a date, or starting and ending dates, and the category you've chosen that it belongs in, and you're set. You can also change the font type or color to really separate events and make them stand out if you want. Once you've added your events, you can see your timeline on the screen with your events placed on it with their small colored icons. At this point you can add clipart, either from the 100 images included on the CD-ROM, or any of your own choosing. You can click and drag or resize images and place them wherever you'd like, or delete it again if you want. There are also a number of options for printing, including the paper orientation and a fit to page option. As soon as you're happy, print it out, and voila - you have a custom timeline to fit whatever you're studying. With such an easy-to-use interface, and simple steps, this will cut timeline-making time in half - and likely inspire you to use it often! Students can even make their own timelines. I just love it when someone develops a product that's timesaving, easy-to-use, and does just what it should. It's about time for a product like this! Systems requirements: Windows 98, ME, 2000, or XP, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or higher, 64 MB RAM (128 MB recommended) - Jess

Do you love the hands-on style and visual aid of timelines with historical figures on them, but arenââ‚™t sure how to put one together? This book by Amy Pak takes away the guess work by suggesting exactly where figures should be placed on a timeline. You can put the figures wherever you want (at the birth of a person, at their death, or when they did something great) but this book gives some great tips for how to put together a timeline in an organized, consistent manner. The beginning pages of the guide discusses timelines in general and talks about sizing the figures, coloring, adhering, paper choice, and how to use the finished timelines to teach. The Table of Contents makes it easy to find specific pages in the Record of Time and the Index makes it easy to place specific figures from the History Through the Ages timeline figure sets. Placing the figures in the Record of Time notebook will no longer be intimidating after you see the suggested placements given in this useful book. ~ Rachel

It sure is!  It’s about time someone made an inexpensive, spiral-bound timeline affordable enough to use for specific studies or for one-year use. Timelines are a wonderful tool for putting events and people into context as they are studied during the year - if you can get your children into the “timeline habit”.  Reading about Isaac Newton and the “discovery” of gravity in science?  Chart it!  Using the Phythagorean theorem in math?  Put in on!  Reading Beowulf in literature?  Add it, too!  You get the idea.  By the end of the year, they should have a great visual overview of the year to reflect back on.  Another great feature of this timeline is its flexibility. You customize the pages to fit your needs.  Each divided column can be a year, decade, century, or whatever you decide.  Focus in or get the big picture - it adapts to your needs.  The shaded row along the center can be used to record the time periods for that page.  The shaded row at the top can contain a page title, or period designation.  Divided lines that separate the ruled columns can also be used to categorize entries by topic or subject area. 28 blank form pages and a sample page gives ideas on customizing timelines.

A timeline is a great way to teach history. Students can easily see how one event relates to another. Make your own customized timeline with this peel and stick kit. The stickers are repositionable, cleanable, and made of a unique, sturdy fabric. The set include 4 strips of timeline (26.5” long x.75” high each,) 24 circles (1.75”) and 24 rectangular “speech bubbles” (4x2.5”) to write on. This is not the kind of surface you can use a dry-erase marker on, instead, you can write on the fabric with chalk and wipe it off later. You may even decide to use a Sharpie and make some permanent events and people to add to your timeline. I like that you can customize the dates with the circles, and I have to say, this is a rather stylish timeline you won’t mind leaving up in your house! Taupe, light blue, red and orange with white are quite tasteful all together. ~Sara

Finally, a timeline created specifically for the high school student! Recognizing that most commercially available timelines are geared toward younger children and offer loads of space for pictures/illustrations but little space for textual information, Janice Campbell has created a timeline perfect for older students.

How is this timeline different? First the main part of the timeline consists of a two-page spread with a five column grid on each page. Each of the columns represents one decade (AD) or one century (BC), meaning that each two page spread equals either one century (AD) or one millennium (BC). Below each grid section is a set of short lines. These lines are designed to record brief items of interest such as a discovery or battle. The author has included suggestions for using a special mark for the event as well as developing a color-coding system for quick referencing. Other differences include a note section at the bottom of each two page spread; special notes section and helpful suggestions for using 3x5 index cards to expand the timeline information.

Timeline begins at 6,000 BC and ends with 2200 AD. Also included is a blank TimeFrame page for a special topic or period study or to photocopy to expand a specific time period. While sharing a variety of ideas for how to use the TimeFrame Timeline, creative juices will flow and it will quickly become a personal reflection of your teen's interests and personality. pb., spiral. ~ Deanne

This 12 ¼" x 9" binder provides you with a handy place to record the chronology of history from 5000 B.C. to today. Beginning in 5000 B.C. each sturdy page holds a bold horizontal line across the middle of the page representing 1000 years. The span of time on each page quickly decreases to only 50 years by 650 B.C. and then slowly fluctuates from between 100-5 years on each page from 0 A.D. to the present, varying to allow all major events and figures to be marked. At least one year is marked on every page below the timeline in order to provide you with markers, and quotes from people throughout history adorn the top or bottom of every couple pages. Following the 112 timeline pages are 17 blank maps of ancient times and the world today. This book is nicely packaged in a 3-ring binder, allowing you to easily flip through the pages and view specific dates. You may easily use this record for writing or drawing in events and people yourself as you study, or see above for accompanying timeline packets. ~ Steph

Add on to your ancient world curriculum or provide a framework to build your family’s study. This interesting little collection of rhymes that “walks” through history can be either. From rhymes like, “Herodotus, Herodotus, Please tell us!”; “Why were you the Father of History?” to “Pompeii, Pompeii, There’s no way!” these lines span recorded history from Creation to early A.D. Rome. While they are not great works of poetic art, they nevertheless serve to highlight significant events and provide mnemonic devices. Fill-in-the-blank worksheets of the rhymes serve as reinforcement. Biographical terms, in the form of timeline figures (1.5” – 2”) with brief biographical information can be used either as a resource/reference for the rhymes or as a separate timeline activity. A series of Biography Tests based on the terms (with accompanying tests with answers filled in) is also provided. Recommended reading suggestions for three grade groupings (K-3; 4-8; and 9-12) round out the resource. 125 pg, pb. ~ Janice

This is another quality, standards-based curriculum that is now available to homeschool families. If you want to be sure that your child is covering material found on standardized testing or your goal is to keep pace with grade-level classrooms or put your child back into the classroom without gaps, Scott Foresman covers the necessary information at each grade level.

Content-wise, Grades 5 and 6 are very similar. The United States (Gr. 5) and Building a Nation (Gr.  6) are identical through Unit 7 (the Civil War and the end of slavery). The grade 6 text – Building a Nation – has an additional two units (Expansion and Change; The United States and the World) which take the historical narrative up to the end of the 19th century. We assume the reason for this duplication is that most states require state history in either 5th or 6th grades. You would then choose to use either the 5th grade or the 6th grade course to cover the first part of American history.

Homeschool bundle includes the necessary student and teacher information at each level. Grade 5 & 6 bundles include 2 volumes of the teacher edition with pouch cards and pouch, hardcover student text, and workbook.

The Teacher Edition includes small-format student text pages with teaching notes in the margins, reproducibles, reference lists, skills handbook for citizenship, research, and geography. Strategies for teaching vocabulary, planning guide, answer keys for the workbook, and other resources are included in the overview of the curriculum and for each unit. You will see some resources mentioned that aren’t included in this bundle, but are not necessary for the completion of the course – transparencies, quick studies, posters, etc. Suggestions for family and calendar activities, writing rubrics, reading suggestions, and graphic organizers are also found in the teacher edition. Online resources can be found at the publisher’s website, sfsocialstudies.com – library, current events, atlas, activities, and biographies, along with live links to learning partners for this curriculum – Smithsonian, Colonial Williamsburg, and others.

Student Texts provide grade-appropriate reading opportunity along with a plethora of visuals – diagrams, timelines, photos, illustrations, and maps – ideal for those who need a little more than just the reading. Units are divided into chapters and further divided into lessons. Each lesson includes a preview, vocabulary, review, and “think and apply” questions. A review section provides summary at the end of each chapter, and can be used as an assessment opportunity (answers provided in the teacher edition).

The Workbook included in each set includes reinforcement activities - vocabulary practice, lesson reviews, reading skills practice, skills worksheets, and projects. Multiple choice, short answer, fill-in-the-blank, reading graphs and maps are all used to enhance and strengthen the students understanding of textual content.
