You're playing Scrabble with three friends. You love the game but you hate the long delays between your turns. You can only spend so much time planning your next move, as someone invariably messes up your plans. What can you do? Bananagrams! In this Scrabble-like game, you compete against up to 7 other players, but your tiles, played and unplayed, are always under your control. In essence, you have your own flexible game of Scrabble going on, and so do your opponents. Start with your tiles (the number depending on the number of players), turn them over, and start making connecting and intersecting words. All letters are the same point value, and you can rearrange your words at any time. When any player has played all his letters, he takes a new tile from the Bunch, as do all the other players. If a player cannot play a letter, he can put the tile back and draw three other tiles. Play continues until there are fewer tiles in the Bunch than there are players. The first player to play all his tiles is the winner of that round (if all his words are correct). Rounds typically take around ten minutes, but can be as little as five, so games can consist of as many rounds as you decide. Variations of the game are also possible, even a solitaire game. Bananagrams comes in a cloth pouch that looks like (you guessed it) a banana, and includes 144 ivory-like tiles and instructions.

Now there is a Bananagrams Game for the younger crowd. This set comes in a green canvas banana pouch that zips shut. There are 80 letter tiles, 13 combination letter tiles, and instruction sheet. Letter tiles have a nice feel to them, the right weight, raised lowercase letters, and a raised baseline so children know which is the bottom. Letters are white on a colored background, vowels are yellow, and letters that are similar (b/d, p/q, m/w) are in different colors to prevent confusion. Combination letter tiles are vowel teams (yellow), word families (vowel in yellow, consonant in blue or red), and digraphs (red). To play the game (1-4 players): 1) Lay all the letter tiles facedown in the center of the table; 2) All players take 15 single-letter tiles; 3) Everyone turns their tiles faceup and races to arrange them in their own word grid; 4) The first one to use all their tiles wins. The tiles can be used to play other games with younger learners – spell your name, abc’s in order, letter match, and more. “Peel” your banana and get started with some “Bananalicious” letter fun! 1CHOKING HAZARD (1). Word game fanatics, take heart! Even if your family and friends decide they've had enough, you can keep the word play going with the variety of challenges in these fun puzzle books. Both Bananagrams!, More Bananagrams! and 10-Minute Bananagrams include over 550 puzzles, while Bananagrams! for Kids includes 130. The newest addition to the line, Bananagrams On-the-Go, has over 600 new puzzles in a pocket-sized format. All puzzles feature depictions of the ivory-like tiles from the game, and blank spaces for your answers. You definitely won't get bored - some puzzles ask you to use all of the "tiles" given to make a crossword, while others ask you to build words from the tiles given, or change a letter in a word to make a new word. Puzzles are rated by number of bananas - the more bananas, the more challenging! Bananagrams! also includes a list of "Weords" or odd words that come in handy during word games. Bananagrams!, More Bananagrams! and 10-Minute Bananagrams are digest-size to fit into a tote or backpack, while the Kids version is larger, with larger illustrated tiles and blank spaces as well. Answers to all puzzles are found at the end of each book. – Jess

Even young readers and spellers can enjoy this versatile word game from the makers of Bananagrams! A green pear-shaped pouch holds 104 ivory-colored tiles, which are lightweight for little hands and larger than the company's other letter tiles. Four complete sets of uppercase alphabet tiles make up the 104 tiles, with each set displaying letters with different patterns. There are several ways to play, but basically, players draw a number of tiles and build simple crosswords out of them (one vertical word with a horizontal word intersecting it and sharing a letter, like C-A-P and M-A-N, where the A is shared between the words). You can play to use letters of any pattern, or award points for crosswords created using letters of the same pattern. Additional variations and game suggestions are included. Of course, the letter tiles are so nice on their own you're sure to find plenty of uses for them as manipulatives, as well as inventing your own word games. – Jess

From the makers of Bananagrams comes Appletters, an equally cute word-building game with a distinct dominoes flavor. Everyone starts with 8 tiles, which feel like ivory and feature a bold, red uppercase letter. The first player uses as many of their tiles as possible and builds a word in the center of the playing surface. The next player must build off of the beginning letter or ending letter of the starter word to make another word. Because players can only add to the beginnings and endings of words, as play progresses, you end up with a domino-like trail of words across the table. If players can't build a word in an available spot, they must pass and draw another tile. Like Bananagrams, there are lots of variations to make the game more interesting. The whole game is nicely packaged in a red apple bag with a zipper. Includes 110 tiles and instructions. - Jess

The classic game of Bananagrams with an extra-competitive twist! In addition to standard tiles for a 2-8 player game, this edition adds 14 chaotic “Power Tiles” to the table. When drawn, some tiles allow a player to perform dastardly deeds such as destroy an opponent’s word grid, steal tiles, or swap spaces; others force them to do silly things, like play one-handed, with no thumbs, or run around the table before continuing! Undesirable Power Tiles can also be removed with no impact on gameplay.
