    This is a ready-to-use spelling program for anybody who struggles with spelling difficulties from fourth grade through adult. Learning to spell through memorization just doesn't work for some people, and that is where this program comes in. Since approximately 85% of the English language follows consistent patterns and rules, this program focuses on its structural regularity. There are six basic concepts taught: sounds, syllables, word building, rules, generalizations, and compensatory strategies (for words not spelled in a regular way). There are two sections. The first addresses issues and concerns about how students feel about spelling, tests for checking student's knowledge in certain areas of spelling (like consonants, vowels, blends, digraphs, and sound/symbol correspondences), guidelines for assessing the student's needs, ways to teach irregular words, how and when to teach homonyms, teaching dictionary skills, and checking spelling with computers. The second section contains the 40 lessons. Each lesson consists of these same parts: getting started, introducing new information, practicing with individual words, practicing spelling in context, reinforcing activities, and extra interesting facts. Everything needed to present the lesson is given in the book. The philosophy and methodology of each part of the lessons are described in the introduction. Knowing this will help the teacher effectively present the lessons and activities to the student, helping them gain the confidence they need to succeed and excel. The activities are varied and interesting, and all 200 consumable activity sheets in the book are reproducible. This is a complete program for individual students or small group instruction, starting with the basics and working up. Many students spell words correctly on tests but then forget to use the correct spelling in their writing. This part of the book gives ideas to keep that from happening. It discusses the importance of good spelling and explains why schools do not do a better job teaching it. It talks about the different types of memory a student uses to assist with spelling and gives suggestions for improvement.

    Recommended Teaching Techniques is the section of the book that suggests a few teaching methods that provide the greatest amount of practice in the least amount of time. Daily Practice provides six guided practices per word per day, each in about thirty seconds. Homework provides eleven independent practices per word per day, each in less than one minute. Diction provides distributed practice and allows the teacher to continually reinforce spellings, homophones, punctuation, capitalization, and form. Personal Words provide an optional method for dealing with misspellings in student writing in an effective and flexible way.

    The Spelling Lists section includes the 1000 Word Core List. It provides lists for grade levels K-6 and pretesting, review testing, and post-testing to assess students' learning. It also includes spelling rules and lessons and worksheets that correspond with the lists.     Looking for spelling re-enforcement for an older student after your spelling program runs out? Look no further. Beezi contains 2000 spelling words on 500 cards, each with four levels of difficulty. At the Killer Bee (highest) level, everyone will be learning new vocabulary words (meretricious, cisalpine). Even the Honey Bee (easy) level words are no spelling gimme's (obscene, fragrance). Besides the word, cards contain phonetic spelling, part of speech, definition, and origin. All levels are in play at the same time, with players advancing farther depending on the difficulty level of the word. Another nice feature of the game is that all players are spelling every word; if the player who's turn it is gets the spelling wrong, all other players with the correct spelling advance. This game for up to 6 players takes about an hour to complete.

    Traditional word search games are challenging, but lack a certain amount of…excitement. How about a head-to-head word search competition for 2-4 players? The round board is set in the middle of the table, the printed letter grid is inserted on the board and the squeezable noise-maker is placed within reach of all. The outside edge of the letter grid shows the words to find, but is obscured by the opaque edge of the board. One small gap reveals the word to be found. All players try to find this word and the first player who does so grabs and squeezes the noise-maker, points out the word, and covers that word with his colored markers. A very complete program organized around quality children's literature (like all LLATL programs) and covering phonics, reading, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, handwriting, and higher-order reasoning. Phonics instruction is systematic, introducing a few sounds at a time and providing opportunities to read a "real" (small story book) book which uses those sounds. The literature component - carefully selected children's favorites - reminds students that the reason for all the hard work in phonics is the joy of reading wonderful books. And woven through both of these elements is comprehensive instruction in all aspects of language arts. Relying heavily on Ruth Beechick's principles for teaching reading (including her letter dice activities), the program includes a wide variety of activities appealing to all learning styles. The teacher's manual is a homeschooler's dream with all the work having been done for you, taking you step-by-step through the 36-week program. New skills are listed for each lesson with a materials list included at the beginning. Almost no teacher preparation is needed - you teach as you read. All answers are provided within the lesson. Higher-order thinking activities are italicized. Examples and diagrams are user-friendly including the easy-to-follow references to the Student Activity Book. Each of the four parts (readiness, short vowels, consonant blends and short vowels, and long vowels) concludes with an evaluation for determining your child's readiness for the next level. The Student Activity Book contains the materials (except for household and school supplies) needed for cut and paste, word wheels, flip books, picture sequencing, story-telling puppets, PLUS handwriting pages that teach all upper and lower case letters, numbers, and punctuation. The comfortable, natural handwriting method that isn't exactly traditional, modern, or italic was developed by the authors. This handwriting instruction is coordinated with the phonics and includes pages for children to carefully complete and display or give as gifts.

    The Student Activity Book is consumable, even having an easy-release binding that allows for clean page removal. Even the back cover is put to good use providing the miniature book covers to be added to the personal reading chart that marks the child's progress. 28 separate readers cover short vowels, blends (bridge readers), and long vowels. They are small-sized for little hands and include black-and-white illustrations. Stories are engaging which is a good thing since a week's worth of learning activities are built around them. The student uses puppets to retell the stories, completes sequencing activities with a series of reader-related events, and answers comprehension questions. One interesting aspect of the teacher-student interaction concerning these readers is that the week's lesson starts off with the teacher reading the small book to the child. After several lessons thoroughly covering the new phonics steps and practice reading parts of the story, the student concludes the week with the successful reading of the small book. This is an effective variation of the typical approach because the goal of reading the book is always before the student. The materials packet is a useful collection of color-coded letter and word cards to use for learning and review along with cards used for reinforcement games and, of course, the letter dice (to be assembled from cardstock patterns). While this part of the program is not exactly consumable - you could use the various components again - the components do get a workout. If you are expecting to use the program with another child, you'll want to save these items and covering them with clear contact paper to preserve them would also be a good idea. The program includes the Teacher's Manual, the Student Activity Book, the 28 Readers, and the Materials Packet.

Well-known children's literature (Read-Aloud Library) is suggested each week, so at the same time your child is learning phonics, he is also learning other important reading skills such as literal recall, comprehension, predicting outcome, and drawing conclusions.     The Way They See It is Artistic Pursuits for 3-5 year-olds (and their parents). It's formatted a bit differently from the rest of the series in that it is written to the parent to help them understand children's artistic development, as well as develop a child's creativity and fine motor skills. The book is composed of two main parts: "The Nature of Children's Artistic Development" and "First Skills." Each lesson contains a portion written for the parent followed by a project for the child. The parent's portion will help them appreciate and foster the child's creative process while also offering practical advice for tackling the project. 36 projects include finger-painting, looking at the colors of the sky and coloring a picture of the sky with crayons, rolling or pressing textured objects into dough, drawing a picture from life, creating a paper bag puppet, drawing a plant, drawing a life-size outline of the child and coloring it in, adding horizon lines to a picture and much more. Many projects also include art reproductions and accompanying questions about the art for discussion. The last section of the book provides guidance for parents to teach their children how to use art supplies properly, such as scissors, pencils, crayons, markers, glue, tape, brushes and paint. For each tool, practical skill-building exercises are suggested. If you want to provide gentle but purposeful art instruction to your youngest students, this is an excellent resource to guide you.

    The McRuffy Third Grade program picks up where grade two leaves off, and incorporates phonics, spelling, reading, language, creative writing and handwriting.

    The emphasis on phonics is less at this grade level. Phonics rules are reviewed and applied to more complex words. The phonics scope & sequence for third grade includes blends, long & short vowels, vowel & consonant digraphs, three and four letter vowel sounds, r-controlled vowels, 3-letter beginnings, ending blends, compound words, broad o sound, exceptions to rules, silent letters, hard and soft 'g' and 'c,' suffixes, root words, and number prefixes.

    Reading material is focused more on developing other reading skills, such as comprehension, fluency, vocabulary development, and an interest in reading. Questions in the teacher's manual vary to reach different thinking levels: basic knowledge, application, synthesis, analysis, inference and evaluation. Students are asked to convey material from their own experience, from their reading, or to make predictions about what happens next.

    Grammar and other language arts follow a weekly pattern which may vary occasionally. Day 1 has an emphasis on word structure and introduces vocabulary. Day 2 focuses on sentence structure and grammar. Day 3 emphasizes higher level language skills, such as analogies and categorizing. Day 4 incorporates creative writing, which is basically a story starter, and Day 5 deals with the larger text structure, such as inference and the main idea of the story.

    Handwriting sentences feature vocabulary and spelling words. There are reproducible cursive practice sheets in the Language Arts test pack and handwriting practice masters, found in the complete kit. The handwriting book (#31126, 31127, or 31128) isn't included in the complete kit. They are optional and the program can be completed without them.

    The teacher's manual has plans for 160 lessons. Each lesson begins by stating the objectives for that lesson. Each objective is marked according to its category P (phonics), S (spelling), R (reading), L (language), CW (creative writing), and H (handwriting). A list of materials needed for that lesson is next and includes pages in the student workbook, reader, spelling word list, etc. The third section of the lesson is the "Teaching." This is the actual lesson, and it couldn't be easier. Some lessons are scripted, and have words in bold print that can be read directly to the students. You can modify the scripting to fit your style, but it's nice to have the suggested wording. Answers to the student workbooks are also included. A scope and sequence for phonics and language are in the front of the book, along with spelling lists, reading list, and vocabulary list. The teacher's manual only comes in the set.

    This would be a wonderfully comprehensive program for third grade. However, punctuation isn't really taught beyond the very basics. You may want to add your own grammar component to round this program out. ~ Donna

    If your dyslexic student is struggling to overcome reading and spelling problems, this manual for students and tutors will provide the step-by-step methodology needed for success. Part of the AVKO series, this manual is based on the original Sequential Spelling, Level 1 (there is a different presentation order of word families from the current version). It employs the same motivators for success and self-image improvement - viewing mistakes as opportunities to learn and providing opportunities for students to experience success. The difference? It is Up to Me provides more sentences. While SS1 has sentences for only the first seven lessons, IIUTM has them for the first sixty lessons. It also provides a scripted approach for the tutor complete with student and tutor contracts, detailed initial lessons, lists of Things to SAY OFTEN as well as Things NEVER to say to your student and a gradual "weaning" movement from provided sentences to student/teacher sentence construction. In other words, this manual provides help for the tutor so he can help the student. While there are a few indications that this is expected to be a pay-for-service tutorship, all material is very applicable and very usable for the home teacher (a.k.a. Mom or Dad). Especially helpful are the four tutorials included in the back: Suggested Order of Diagnosis and Remediation for Type #1 Words ("The Simple" - those following regular phonic patterns), Type #2 Words ("The Fancy" - those which follow phonic patterns from foreign languages), "Insane" Words (e.g. was, laugh, Thames,), and "Tricky" Words (e.g. reed/read; read/red; accept/except). Each of these tutorials include teaching helps, pronunciations (where necessary), and lists of words in each group. There is also a tutorial for designing a diagnostic test.

    The author suggests choosing this program (as opposed to SS1) when the student is older (i.e. 11 years on up). The next step after completion of this program would be SS Level 2 or 3. Student pages are provided (but are not reproducible) for the first 68 lessons with students instructed to use regular notebook paper for Lessons 69-180. 192 pgs spiral-bound. ~ Janice

    There is more to this program than what might initially meet the eye. Seemingly only a series of six smallish workbooks, these provide the structure for a one-on-one tutoring relationship that will give an older student the tools he/she needs to become a successful reader. Organized by phonics but aiming for mastery, not only of phonics-based words but also of sight words, the six books each have five lessons. At a mastery rate (achievable with consistent work) of one lesson per week, the series can be completed in about 8 months and will take the student from a just beginning reading level to a fifth level.

    Lessons follow a pattern. Phonics Word Reading provides lists of words – organized by phonics sound – for the student to read and master. Interestingly, although the lessons start with short vowel sounds – they also cover additional sounds. For instance, the short a lesson also includes r-controlled a and all/aw words. This part of the lesson also includes a list of “Challenge Words” – compound words related to the lesson sound. The Spelling portion of the lesson includes a word list for the student to read and learn to spell followed by activities (i.e., fill in the blanks, write words from list under pictures). Sight Words are covered by flashcard lists (can be reproduced and cut apart) and more fill-in-the-blank exercises. Reading practice takes the form of Bible Stories (one per lesson) taken from the Old Testament and in chronological order through the workbooks. The student first listens to the story, finds/marks sight words, completes review and comprehension exercises, reads the story and then retells it in his own words.

    Checklists abound in these books – an overall list in the back of the book and within each lesson – while the inside front cover is a Progress Chart. This is where the one-on-one tutoring design of the series becomes apparent. A Tutor Guide is included with each set of workbooks providing helpful information for the tutor as well as the expectations for the tutoring relationship. As a mastery program, flexibility, consistency, and positive reactions to student efforts are essentials for success. Before starting, students need to have a basic knowledge of the alphabet: recognize letters, say letter names, write the letters, and know the usual sounds of consonants.     This is a brand new series from Alfred. The obvious question would be, "How is this series different from Alfred's Basic Piano Course?" Well, there are many differences, from minor changes in the way concepts are introduced to more significant changes such as the fact that this course uses a "non-position" approach (meaning that it doesn't rely on specific fingers for specific keys).     Sing, Spell, Read & Write continues a fine tradition in this grammar program. It is written to follow the Level 2: Grand Tour program. Grammar Plus covers reading, writing, spelling, phonics, speaking and comprehension. The kit includes the teacher's manual, Trophy Book I, Trophy Book II and a music cassette to be used with Trophy Book II.

    Trophy Book I is divided into sections of concepts to be covered. The first section is on alphabetic order. Section 2 is sentence concepts including complete and incomplete sentences, subject and predicate, and types of sentences. Section 3 is capitalization rules including beginning of sentences, the word I, names, months, days, holidays, initials, titles of people, books, plays, etc. and when writing a letter. Spelling I is the fourth section of the student book. There are 95 lists of 10 words each. Spelling lists are given alphabetically and include a review of some words from earlier levels.

    Trophy Book II covers writing letters, writing stories, language manners, parts of speech, practical reading skills and Spelling II.     Subtitled "Beginning Latin for Homeschoolers and Self-Taught Students of Any Age," I could see this book serving as a great introduction to Latin for the family who is not sure they want to jump right into a full-fledged Latin course. Of course, it would be just as useful for an older student (or even Mom and Dad), if they have never studied Latin but want to learn it on their own. The course was designed out of necessity by author William E. Linney, after he was asked by a relative to teach Latin to her children. He set out looking for a course that would not require a Latin teacher, was self-paced, self explanatory, offered lots of practice exercises, was non-threatening, and inexpensive. When he couldn't find a course that suited his needs, he designed this one. The book contains 134 lessons, which are short (usually less than a page in length), un-fluffy, and incremental in progression. Lessons strike a nice balance between introducing new vocabulary, explaining simple grammatical concepts, and memorization of noun and verb forms. No lesson covers all of these tasks, but instead focuses on one objective and covers it well. Lessons that introduce new Latin vocabulary feature a new Latin word, its English meaning, and sometimes a pronunciation tip. This is usually followed by about ten sentences to translate. Lessons on grammar are also bite-sized, and different forms and cases are introduced gradually. As they are introduced, they are added to a chart, and students will translate sentences that use the forms and cases that they have learned. As charts are filled with endings or forms, students may be asked to memorize them, to aid in future lessons. Just for fun, "Latin Expressions" are scattered throughout the book. In each one, the author takes a common Latin phrase like "caveat emptor," or "etc." and explains the Latin history behind each phrase. Don't underestimate how these little "sparks" of knowledge whet your appetite to learn more! By the end of the book, students will have stockpiled basic vocabulary of around 100 words, be comfortable translating simple sentences in Latin, and have a grasp of basic Latin grammar.

    There are a couple of aspects of this course worth noting. First of all, because the book is more of a text than a worktext it is not designed to be consumable. For translation purposes, the author recommends translating the sentences in a separate notebook. If extra practice is desired, you may wish to translate the sentences back to the form given in the lesson. Secondly, while we all realize that pronunciation is very difficult to teach "out of a book", the author has considered this, and has come up with an ingenious solution. He has provided MP3 audio files free of charge on his website, which can be downloaded and used with the lessons. As an added bonus, you can choose from either classical pronunciation or ecclesiastical pronunciation. Audio commentary on the lessons and a host of other helpful resources is also included on the website. Lastly, this course would be excellent prep for an older student who will be studying Latin in high school or college who hasn't had the benefit of laying a basic Latin foundation earlier in life. Upon completion of this book, I think students would be more ready to tackle Lingua Latina, Oxford University Latin, Henle Latin, or Cambridge Latin, than if they were starting off cold. Latina Christiana I or other complete courses designed for younger students could also be considered reasonable continuations, although there would be much more overlap/review between courses. This is a terrific way to get started in Latin and I am glad that the author did not find what he was looking for to teach Latin, because he has certainly written a course that fulfills all of his goals! – Jess

    While new homeschool curriculums crop up fairly often for history, science and language arts, it's a rarity that a new homeschool health program is developed! Author Michele Spadafora has done an incredible job in pulling together this easy-to-use, thoroughly Christian P.E. and nutrition course that incorporates weekly lessons in "faith, fitness and fuel." It's an 18-week course that includes three segments on each of those "building blocks" per week, with tests included after every 3rd or 4th week and lots of helpful and inspiring video content as well. Scheduling works most naturally if you do health three days per week for one semester. Each week includes three topical reading segments (each about two pages in length), questions for the student, space to write goals for all three areas for the week, and space to journal about the week. "Faith" reading assignments focus on a biblical message, typically a goal that we could all work towards in our relationship with the Lord. These include: giving God control, replacing stress with peace, prayer, worship, loving others, serving others, making disciples, and more. Scripture references are sprinkled throughout the text, and several questions typically follow the reading. "Fitness" readings focus on the practical and include the benefits of exercising, frequency of exercising, warm-ups and cool-downs, proper form, weight loss basics, core strength, exercise gear, etc. "Fuel" readings focus on nutrition, like eating portions and proportions, understanding food labels, the importance of breakfast, avoiding sugar, the importance of whole grains, eating healthy snacks, avoiding diet mistakes, understanding eating disorders, and more. Readings on fitness and fuel typically do not have questions for the student, but are always followed by a space to write a goal for the week. The tests are fairly short and made up entirely of multiple-choice questions (an answer key for these is included at the end of the book).

    The video content is one of my favorite aspects of the program. It not only allows the author to "talk to" the student via video, but it also provides a way to demonstrate proper exercise form, workout ideas, or cooking technique. There are 32 short videos that complement the content in the book, and prompts to view them are found at the end of the readings. Students are also directed to several "Burst" videos throughout the program. These videos are about ten minutes in length and, just like the name suggests, these offer short energetic workouts to get the blood pumping. These are also found on the author's website. A DVD is also included with the book which features three full-body workouts, each about a ½-hour in length. The workout routines are fast-moving, yet simple enough to follow along with and feature upbeat Christian music from a variety of contemporary Christian artists. No fancy gear is required; while exercise bands make an appearance in several of the workout videos, and weights and exercise balls are discussed in the book, most fitness routines do not require any equipment. Whether you use the routines included or your own fitness program, the student is asked to work out at least three times a week, outside of specific assignments from the book.

    This easy-to-implement program would be perfect to do together as a family. The readings are fairly short and easy for students at different ability levels to understand. Technical details on nutrition and fitness are kept to a minimum, and the fitness routines and exercises will appeal equally to girls and boys. Compared to a full-year health course, you won't find nearly as much content on the human body or physiology here; the emphasis is truly on practical knowledge and motivation to stay fit. It would make sense to incorporate the nutritional information into the whole family's diet as well. The text is designed as a consumable, but if your students all write in their own journals or notebooks, you could use the text as a family.     The synthesis of years of planning, teaching, writing, and testing, this "Guide to Teach Your Child to Read" is truly inspirational! It incorporates so many great ideas and methods in an unforced, natural manner that it had to be written by a homeschooling mom! Valerie Bendt, author and homeschooling mother of six, has provided yet another wonderful tool to help us teach efficiently, effectively and personally! The course consists of 108 lessons which the author recommends using at the rate of 3 lessons per week with review and reinforcement of skills in between. Employing an approach similar to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, this low-stress (for teacher and student), gentle format allows you to sit alongside your child and enjoy a one-on-one adventure in learning to read. While Valerie has borrowed some great ideas from methods employed in that volume, her offering is distinctively different, too - both in format and, more notably, implementation. While both volumes are constructed as beginning reading programs (not intended as totally comprehensive phonics instruction), the instruction in Reading Made Easy goes far beyond teaching phonics rules to become a more fluid and total age- and skill-appropriate language arts presentation for the beginning reader. Valerie's program also puts much more emphasis on the value and enjoyment of reading and on instilling a love of the written word in your child than any other phonics/reading program I've seen. She incorporates multi-sensory learning that will appeal to children of all learning modalities, using both kinesthetic manipulation (via cards and drawings) and auditory exercises. Whether instinctively or deliberately, she has created an almost ideal reading program to incorporate many of the "multiple-intelligences" as well! But, enough with the praise! On to the nuts and bolts of the program! Like Teach Your Child..., the lessons are meant to be taught side-by-side, preferably close enough to snuggle. Scripted lessons generally begin with skill review and practice, then progress to introduction of new phonetic constructs (and/or sight words) and end with reading practice. A special system of marking is used to enable the beginning reader to quickly master new and unfamiliar rules. Stories are all captivating, entertaining, and illustrated with a simple black-and-white illustration. Reading comprehension is incorporated in the reading exercises even at the earliest levels. Both volumes will have your child reading simple chapter books by the end of instruction. This is where the similarities end. Now for the differences in both format and content. While Teach Your Child... uses larger type face in the beginning, progressing to a smaller (but still bolder) typeface at book's end, Valerie employs a consistent point size throughout. The type size is roughly the same as the ending type in Teach Your Child.... This will be better with older beginning readers, but may deter the very young reader. However, the marking system used in Reading Made Easy is less distracting. Teach Your Child... uses overlines to indicate long vowels and makes silent letters smaller (in comparison). Consonant digraphs are shown by actually joining the letters. When you put this all together it looks a little - well, funny. The reader is weaned from these special markings by the end of the volume, however, and typeset becomes consistent. Valerie uses more evenly-sized lettering throughout, graying short vowels, bolding long ones, and "ghosting" silent letters (forming them with dots instead of solid lines). Blends and digraphs are circled, a visual cue that they work as a phonetic unit. This system of marking is employed throughout the program in reading sections. Some weaning is done in copywork and sentence work, however. As a whole, the text has a less cluttered appearance than Teach Your Child. I appreciate Valerie's scripted text being in a different font rather than in the red ink found in the latter. Missing also are the arrows beneath every practice letter, word, and sentence. If your child has an extremely difficult time with left-to-right tracking, you might appreciate the arrows; if not, it just adds extra busy-ness to the page. I do miss the stand-out bolding found in Teach Your Child. Some children may find it easier to ignore the rest of the writing on the pages if their "part" really stands out. If you plan on using Italic Handwriting, Valerie's use of LucidaSansSchool font (used in Portland State's Italic Handwriting program) will appeal. If you plan on using a pre-cursive (or modern manuscript) program, ditto. Reading Made Easy also uses a written "a" while Teach Your Child uses a typeset "a". Reading Made Easy covers a little more phonics "ground" than Teach Your Child and includes a list of phonetic constructs at the end of the book for concepts not covered in the body of the book. The biggest differences in the two programs, though, is in their implementation. Lessons in Reading Made Easy are far more "spontaneous" and offer more variety in format. Impromptu games and activities are sprinkled liberally throughout, giving the program a more playful nature. Parents construct Sight Word Worms and a Sight Word Bingo game to help children add critical sight words to their reading repertoire. The incorporation of these in stories then results in more natural, interesting reading selections. Children are encouraged to flex their artistic wings by duplicating simple illustrations and writing is incorporated as they first write sentences, then stories to accompany them. Index cards are used extensively (buy lots of them!) for preparing aids to learn word and sentence construction. Many lessons include putting words from a simple sentence on cards (one word per card and usually marked using Valerie's notations), mixing, then having your child reconstruct the sentence. This kinesthetic activity helps children understand capitalization, ending punctuation, and sentence construction from early on. While all lessons include a short reading selection to reinforce your instruction, the final lessons in Reading Made Easy contain a real chapter book. In each of twelve lessons, you read a chapter of the story after which your child reads a simpler (but not too watered-down) adaptation written at his level of reading ability. Copywork is also included in most lessons (in the tradition of Ruth Beechick), but the author suggests omitting it if your child's fine motor skills are not ready for additional writing. One final feature that every mom will appreciate is ending each lesson with read-aloud time from a book of your choice (Valerie has thoughtfully included a list of recommended picture and chapter books in the ending section of the book). We all know that reading to our children regularly increases both reading aptitude and appreciation. This inclusion assures that we will make the time for it and provides our children with a fitting "reward" for completing each lesson.
