     Self-described as Charlotte Mason-flavored, this is language arts curriculum with a Biblical emphasis. As a starting place for each weekly lesson, students will read a continuing story about friends Micah and Claire and their Sunday School experiences. Each week follows the same pattern of activities: Day 1, read the weekly story; Days 2-3, learn topics in writing, grammar and punctuation; Day 4, write responses to a prompt (alternating between picture study, poetry and a Psalm); and Day 5, work on spelling and vocabulary and build a dictionary. Brief assessments are provided quarterly. The fourth quarter is designed for review. Starting with Level 2, students are introduced to punctuation, grammar & writing. students will learn about nouns, compound words, subjects/predicates; possessive nouns; combining sentences; commas; interjections; action verbs; homophones; synonyms/antonyms and specific verbs such as be, has and see and pronouns like this and that. Biblical themes and assignments (such as memorizing verses from 1 Corinthians 13 alongside Micah and Claire) are used throughout. Level 3 will further strengthen previous reading, observation and communication skills, and begin writing paragraphs. Level 4 (expected late 2018) will strengthen previous skills and add study in noun types, verb tenses, mechanics and write compositions.

      This is a combined student and teacher consumable book. On the student pages, teacher notes are highlighted and kept minimal. While designed for you and the student to work along together, this text provides additional direction in the front matter and in the Teacher’s Aid section (about 100 pgs) in the back. This section includes dictionary pages to copy (or you can print off from the publisher’s web site); optional games to practice different language skills; spelling practice ideas; sight words alphabet practice; copywork practice; and grammar study sheets. You’ll want to provide more reading practice opportunities: a template to record these and a recommended Master Books reading list is included. Scriptures are from the NASB. Non-reproducible, consumable and 3-hole punched.

      Master Books recommends beginning this series after Foundations Phonics and Basic Language Skills. However, to select a starting place, the general expectation is that the student’s skills should be comfortably at grade level (in reading, writing, and in handwriting).

    The McRuffy Third Grade program picks up where grade two leaves off, and incorporates phonics, spelling, reading, language, creative writing and handwriting.

    The emphasis on phonics is less at this grade level. Phonics rules are reviewed and applied to more complex words. The phonics scope & sequence for third grade includes blends, long & short vowels, vowel & consonant digraphs, three and four letter vowel sounds, r-controlled vowels, 3-letter beginnings, ending blends, compound words, broad o sound, exceptions to rules, silent letters, hard and soft 'g' and 'c,' suffixes, root words, and number prefixes.

    Reading material is focused more on developing other reading skills, such as comprehension, fluency, vocabulary development, and an interest in reading. Questions in the teacher's manual vary to reach different thinking levels: basic knowledge, application, synthesis, analysis, inference and evaluation. Students are asked to convey material from their own experience, from their reading, or to make predictions about what happens next.

    Grammar and other language arts follow a weekly pattern which may vary occasionally. Day 1 has an emphasis on word structure and introduces vocabulary. Day 2 focuses on sentence structure and grammar. Day 3 emphasizes higher level language skills, such as analogies and categorizing. Day 4 incorporates creative writing, which is basically a story starter, and Day 5 deals with the larger text structure, such as inference and the main idea of the story.

    Handwriting sentences feature vocabulary and spelling words. There are reproducible cursive practice sheets in the Language Arts test pack and handwriting practice masters, found in the complete kit. The handwriting book (#31126, 31127, or 31128) isn't included in the complete kit. They are optional and the program can be completed without them.

    The teacher's manual has plans for 160 lessons. Each lesson begins by stating the objectives for that lesson. Each objective is marked according to its category P (phonics), S (spelling), R (reading), L (language), CW (creative writing), and H (handwriting). A list of materials needed for that lesson is next and includes pages in the student workbook, reader, spelling word list, etc. The third section of the lesson is the "Teaching." This is the actual lesson, and it couldn't be easier. Some lessons are scripted, and have words in bold print that can be read directly to the students. You can modify the scripting to fit your style, but it's nice to have the suggested wording. Answers to the student workbooks are also included. A scope and sequence for phonics and language are in the front of the book, along with spelling lists, reading list, and vocabulary list. The teacher's manual only comes in the set.

    This would be a wonderfully comprehensive program for third grade. However, punctuation isn't really taught beyond the very basics. You may want to add your own grammar component to round this program out. ~ Donna

    Many students have an increased awareness of nutrition and fitness around high school, and this is also an essential age for them to learn about healthy habits in order for them to take care of their bodies. This book provides a well-rounded study for just that purpose. The book is composed of fifty reproducible student lessons and an answer key. These pages are presented in three different parts. The first twenty-five pages cover protein, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, calcium, water, salt, alcohol, energy, and more. Here students will learn about all of these individual components of nutrition. In the next section, they'll work with these components in order to discover how to eat well, maintain an ideal (healthy!) weight, and be a wise consumer. The last part helps students evaluate all of the information they've learned through four different tests and worksheets.     Using the Phono-Graphix system presented in this book will enable you to "teach your child to read in one-tenth the time of phonics with a 100 percent success rate." That's quite a claim! Not only that, but "research conducted on this method reveals it to be the most effective remedial program available, bringing previously failed readers, 40 percent of whom had been previously diagnosed with learning disabilities, to grade level in only twelve sessions." By now you're asking, "What is it?" and "How is this method different from phonics?" The major difference is that, instead of teaching that letters "say" or "make this sound," Phono-Graphix begins with the premise that letters and letter combinations are codes that represent or stand for a sound. This is an important distinction and, if you still have an open mind, one that makes sense. As soon as you teach that "ai" says "a," you have to allow for all the exceptions to this rule. What about "ai" in "again," "said," "certain," or "mountain"? Wouldn't it be better to present "ai" as a code that could stand for different sounds in different words? In the same way that a round shape could stand for either a ball or a circle, letter combinations can stand for more than one sound. Children readily accept this. They also accept that two symbols in concert (a square and a triangle, for example) can stand for something altogether different, like a house, when the triangle is placed atop the square. Another example the author uses is the case where different letter combinations can make the same sound ("ee," "ea," "y"). They showed children pictures of different flowers. In each case, when asked what the picture showed, the children responded, "a flower." All agreed that some things can look different but still have the same name.

    Before beginning the program, you will administer pre-tests to try and pinpoint your child's skill level. However, regardless of score, the author recommends doing all the lessons. The first instructional chapter teaches the "Basic Code." Briefly, the method teaches the sounds that letters and letter combinations stand for. You do not teach letter names, but the correspondence between sounds and sound pictures. Children also learn that spoken words are made up of sounds. They learn that written words are formed by sound pictures (letters and letter combinations) that represent sounds in words. Words are read and written from left to right. They also must be able to "break up" spoken words into the individual sounds and, conversely, to blend the sounds together in words. So begins this unique instruction. Further chapters address more complex letter constructs and multisyllabic words. As noted by Kathy von Duyke in The Big Book of Home Learning (Volume 2), not much attention is given to spelling. The book is basically a how-to-read method that you can use for both beginning and remedial readers, regardless of age.

    "It's just common sense!" Actually, it's the Blue Book Common Sense Reading Program and yes, everything about this program is common sense. A very complete program organized around quality children's literature (like all LLATL programs) and covering phonics, reading, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, handwriting, and higher-order reasoning. Phonics instruction is systematic, introducing a few sounds at a time and providing opportunities to read a "real" (small story book) book which uses those sounds. The literature component - carefully selected children's favorites - reminds students that the reason for all the hard work in phonics is the joy of reading wonderful books. And woven through both of these elements is comprehensive instruction in all aspects of language arts. Relying heavily on Ruth Beechick's principles for teaching reading (including her letter dice activities), the program includes a wide variety of activities appealing to all learning styles. The teacher's manual is a homeschooler's dream with all the work having been done for you, taking you step-by-step through the 36-week program. New skills are listed for each lesson with a materials list included at the beginning. Almost no teacher preparation is needed - you teach as you read. All answers are provided within the lesson. Higher-order thinking activities are italicized. Examples and diagrams are user-friendly including the easy-to-follow references to the Student Activity Book. Each of the four parts (readiness, short vowels, consonant blends and short vowels, and long vowels) concludes with an evaluation for determining your child's readiness for the next level. The Student Activity Book contains the materials (except for household and school supplies) needed for cut and paste, word wheels, flip books, picture sequencing, story-telling puppets, PLUS handwriting pages that teach all upper and lower case letters, numbers, and punctuation. The comfortable, natural handwriting method that isn't exactly traditional, modern, or italic was developed by the authors. This handwriting instruction is coordinated with the phonics and includes pages for children to carefully complete and display or give as gifts.

    The Student Activity Book is consumable, even having an easy-release binding that allows for clean page removal. Even the back cover is put to good use providing the miniature book covers to be added to the personal reading chart that marks the child's progress. 28 separate readers cover short vowels, blends (bridge readers), and long vowels. They are small-sized for little hands and include black-and-white illustrations. Stories are engaging which is a good thing since a week's worth of learning activities are built around them. The student uses puppets to retell the stories, completes sequencing activities with a series of reader-related events, and answers comprehension questions. One interesting aspect of the teacher-student interaction concerning these readers is that the week's lesson starts off with the teacher reading the small book to the child. After several lessons thoroughly covering the new phonics steps and practice reading parts of the story, the student concludes the week with the successful reading of the small book. This is an effective variation of the typical approach because the goal of reading the book is always before the student. The materials packet is a useful collection of color-coded letter and word cards to use for learning and review along with cards used for reinforcement games and, of course, the letter dice (to be assembled from cardstock patterns). While this part of the program is not exactly consumable - you could use the various components again - the components do get a workout. If you are expecting to use the program with another child, you'll want to save these items and covering them with clear contact paper to preserve them would also be a good idea. The program includes the Teacher's Manual, the Student Activity Book, the 28 Readers, and the Materials Packet.

    We sell additional Student Activity Books, Reader Sets, and Material Packets so you can use the program with a second student. Well-known children's literature (Read-Aloud Library) is suggested each week, so at the same time your child is learning phonics, he is also learning other important reading skills such as literal recall, comprehension, predicting outcome, and drawing conclusions. These books are an integral part of the program and the Student Activity Book relies on them. Although usually available at the local library, for your convenience we also sell them. They are listed in order of use. Although this program focuses on first grade skills, it would be possible to use this program with a "ready" kindergartner.     Based on the three-point instructional method: "this is;" "show me;" and "what is?" as well as an underlying Socratic question/answer format, ShillerMath Language Arts is Montesorri at its best. The totally scripted teaching manuals each provide a semester's worth of daily lessons (71-84 lessons in each book). Kit 1 (Books 1-4) is designed for ages 3-5. We understand there will be two more levels: Books 5-8 are for ages 4-7; Books 9-12 are for ages 6-8. If these age levels seem a bit odd to you (they do to me as well), it's because there are two levels of things happening here. One is phonics instruction and the other is an amazing/exciting combination of language arts "more." For example, here are the "more" topics covered on the Book 4 Review Test imitate (speaking, listening, reading, writing), introduce yourself, repeating 5 words back in order, articles (as in part of speech), retelling a story, emotions (tell me about a time when . . .), touch typing (home position basics), rhyming words, identifying adjectives, describing basic geographic features, describing peripheral vision, naming the months of the year, naming first ten ordinal numbers, comparisons, copying a very diverse collection of shapes, showing directions, and, lastly, identifying Shakespeare and naming a sonnet. The bottom line is that there is a lot of learning going on here and a lot of flexibility. An older student (5 years) might start with Kit 1 and fly through the learning but still come away with new information.

    Lessons require no preparation and vary in both length and complexity. There is also great variety in the content which is why the teacher is encouraged to skip lessons if the student is not ready for its content. Since one of the basic premises of Montesorri education is that children are natural learners, the teacher's role is to provide a learning-friendly environment and the proper tools. Students are usually the best gauge of their own competence and will know when they have closure on a topic so be prepared to be flexible and sensitive. There is a checklist included, as the back cover of each lesson book is to be used to record when a lesson is completed.

    A good part of Montessori instruction is managing the dialog between teacher and student. Although appropriate wording is modeled in the lessons, there is also general information at the front of the Lesson Books on building an environment conducive to learning.

    As mentioned before the Lesson Books are totally scripted. This means that everything you need to say to the student is provided for you. For instance, Lesson 24, Book 4 practices comparative terminology. There are eight points to the lesson. The first point covers "est" words and comparing three or more things. The second point talks about the "er" words and comparing two things. Then there are five sets of pictures of various objects to compare starting with three objects of varying sizes but progressing to four and six objects. About 95 pgs each, spiral-bound.

    The lesson on emotions is illustrative of the different directions this curriculum takes. First we are told that "emotions are what we feel." There are pictures of four children illustrating these emotions: shy, sad, jealous, and sorry. As part of the lesson the child is encouraged to demonstrate how she/he feels with each of those emotions as well as to tell a story about a time when he/she was . . . . . All in all, an interesting and excellent introduction to an intriguing subject.

    The Mother Goose Book includes 358 "stories." These are to be used as part of each day's lessons (read-aloud) and can be requested by the child as desired. These stories are printed in large print and would be read by the child (if able). There are multiple stories on each page. Please note there are no illustrations at all in the book. 152 pgs. spiral-bound.

    The Lesson Mat needs to be mentioned. It is large (22" x 34") and cream-colored. Fabric is some sort of foam but the touch is velvety. It is slightly stretchy in one direction. This mat is used with all lessons and serves as a portable workspace allowing you to take your lessons anywhere inside (or outside) of the house.

    The Kit contents all have a purpose within the lessons. While most of the items are somewhat typical (letters, numbers, crayons, Play-Doh), that is not true of the Montessori shapes manipulatives. There are ten shapes (square, circle, triangle, rectangle, trapezoid, quatrefoil, pentagon, oval, elipse, and curvilinear triangle) illustrated two different ways: blue shapes with molded lifters and ten matching pink stencil shapes. Stencils are 5.5" squares; shapes are various sizes with 3 7/8" square being the largest.

    Kit 1 includes Lesson Books 1-4; foam mat; magnetic alphabet (uppercase & lowercase letters plus numbers); quinoa grain, washable large crayons; shapes with knobs and matching bases (10), 4 tubs of Play-Doh; book of Mother Goose Rhymes; and CD with 24 language arts songs. ~ Janice

    Continuing the excellent phonics, reading, and language arts instruction of the LLATL Blue Program, the Red Program incorporates the same effective methodologies and teaching strategies. The user-friendly teacher's manual (Red Book) with 36 weekly lesson plans is comprehensive and thorough with little teacher preparation needed. The heftier Student Activity Book reviews skills taught in the first grade program and reinforces new skills with a similar assortment of excellent activities: word wheels, flip books, games, and cut and paste activities. More emphasis is placed on poetry, sentence structure, grammar and writing - all learned in the context of stories. Spelling is also emphasized more with weekly word lists, visual representation of words, and puzzles and games for review/reinforcement. The six readers are longer but just as engaging with soft-hued color print rather than black & white. Periodic skill assessments give the teacher the tools to decide what the student needs to review.     Indeed a sound approach to reading, this program is a solid, phonetically comprehensive program with reinforcing reading text incorporated directly in the book. It reminds me somewhat of a cross between Alphaphonics and Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, but with improved teacher instruction, lesson implementation, and textual presentation. As in those popular programs, your child will begin reading as soon as the first letter sounds are taught. And, in a mere 90 "byte-sized" lessons, your child will be reading at a beginning 3rd grade reading level. This program is also recommended for both remedial and ELL students. In fact, the school version of this program it is currently being used in more than 20 elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school.

    Prior to beginning the lessons in this book, your child should have letter name and recognition skills and some phonemic awareness (the author provides background and methods for teaching these, or use another product that teaches these skills; see our Early Childhood section). You will want to read all of the preliminary teacher pages before actually starting lessons; otherwise you will miss out on helpful background information and other resources provided for you. While instruction in each lesson is devoted to reading, the author presents a great spelling methodology, complete with word lists, to integrate with lessons along with (brief) guidelines for incorporating handwriting, vocabulary, and creative writing into the program. Also in the intro section are specific instructions for teaching letter sounds, blending, playing Scramble Spell, and other implementation directions which would be redundant to include in each lesson. You should also teach the first four letter sounds introduced (a, t, s, c) BEFORE lesson 1-1, using the approach outlined in the teacher section. Here, the author strongly recommends using a set of flashcards WITHOUT pictures on them (such as the Alphabet Basics cards we've included below).

    The program teaches roughly 80 common sound/spelling patterns, based on the Orton-Gillingham phonograms as well as nearly all of the 100 most common sight words. I appreciate the author's sentiment below her Sequence of Skills table as she says, "Words from the list of 100 most common sight words that are not listed here are words that are decodable," as this echoes one of my pet peeves. Too many programs introduce phonetically decodable words as "sight words". Other features that captivate my heart for phonetic instruction are: integrated review of previously-learned sounds in each lesson; large, readable font with initial extra spacing between words and letters; immediate phonetic skill reinforcement in reading selections; word "play" incorporated into spelling lessons; longer "introduction" of each short vowel sound to prevent confusion; emphasis on blending from the beginning; and helpful review of phonograms by phoneme (yes!) in the latter lessons.

    Prior to the first lesson, a "How to Teach Sound Bytes Lessons" section concisely recaps directions in the teacher section of the book. Most lessons follow a similar format. Previously introduced sounds are reviewed, 1-2 new sounds are introduced, sight words (if any) are presented, new sounds are practiced in words, then sentences, and a story using only old and newly learned sounds and sight words is read. Lessons should take from 15-30 minutes per day. Lessons are generally grouped into units of 5 (lesson 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5), though there is no apparent reason for the grouping (maybe to accommodate a 5-day school week?). Units are also divided into chapters. Chapter One (38 lessons) teaches letter sounds and CVC words, ending with an impressively-long reading selection. Chapter Two (10 lessons) focuses on long vowel, silent-e constructions. Chapter Three (25 lessons) covers more advanced phonemes like r-controlled vowels, vowel digraphs, silent letters, and multi-syllabic words. Chapter Four (17 lessons) is "Challenge". Here is the synthesis of phonograms by sound as well as some final review and a list of additional sound patterns not included in the lessons. Font size and spacing between letters and words on the student pages tapers as the student progresses but, even at the end, is not too small or tight for an early reader. Line drawings scattered throughout the volume are sparse, attractive and non-distracting.

    The author suggests that your child practice handwriting the capital letters when learning letter NAMES and practice handwriting lower-case letters when learning the letter SOUNDS in this program. This can be done informally with a ruled white board (or paper) and marker or by using a beginning handwriting book (see descriptions and graphics on our website).

    I would strongly suggest incorporating the author's Scramble Spell game (word lists included) into most lessons rather than a standard spelling program, especially for beginning readers. This provides additional reinforcement for newly-learned sounds and adds a kinesthetic element to the lessons. By making additional words from an initial "base" word you explore onsets and rimes, word building, and practice encoding without all of the writing and rewriting that might turn your fun learning session into "work". A set of paper letter "cards" is provided in the book, but you may want to use a ready-made set of letter tiles or manipulatives for this (some suggestions below). If you want your child to have more practice actually writing words, follow her advice for incorporating creative writing into the program. Even the youngest students will enjoy making their own books that align with their budding language skills.

    The author suggests following up her program by having your child read books from a carefully sequenced list included at the end of the book. She thoughtfully provides lexile scores, implementation instructions, and further resources for locating other appropriate reading materials.

      Building upon the skills learned in Level 1, or for a child who is comfortable with beginning phonics, arithmetic and writing skills, this level strengthens reading, writing and arithmetic through incremental practice and instruction. Approximate skill level is 6-8 cognitive years of age.

      Flexible to best meet the needs of your learner, there are 3 options for personalizing the lessons for your situation. First, is the 4-day schedule, which is the heart of the required lessons and is easy to follow. Families preferring a 5-day per week schedule will appreciate two options for a fifth day of learning. The first option schedules day 5 as a review day for additional practice and the second option is designed for more advanced learners and includes enrichment activities called “Delve Deeply.” These enrichment activities vary. In addition, there are continued studies in Scripture with memorization and quality literature selections and poetry for listening and reading skills, and memorization.       Written for homeschoolers by Rebecca Celsor, The Write Foundation Level 1 Sentence to Paragraph curriculum is not flashy but is certainly deep and incorporates biblical content. Lessons give step-by-step teaching instruction which help you teach your student how to be an independent writer. Emphasis is placed on the writing process, writing structure, and word usage (basic grammar and figures of speech). This level quickly advances from writing descriptive sentences to writing creative and informative paragraphs by teaching how to use the fundamentals of brainstorming, outlining, drafting and editing. Originally these lessons were designed for those who struggle with or dislike writing but this program works well for all students.  This curriculum can easily be used with 1-2 students or in a co-op setting.

      The basic daily lesson format is organized into 3 main areas: sentence structure (practicing grammar, developing sentences, vocabulary and figures of speech); paragraph and essay writing; and poetry instruction (to build vocabulary, grammar, and figures of speech within writing instruction context). The course provides 30 lessons guiding the student from sentence writing to 2-paragraph writings. Two schedules (5-day or 10-day per lesson options, from 30 min to 1.5 hours daily) complete the course in either one or two years.


      The teacher and students are equally engaged in the step-by-step process. All information needed to present each lesson is provided in the spiral teacher instruction manuals which include teaching instructions and Teacher Presentations (TP) which are examples and suggestions to help present the lessons. During the lesson, students discuss ideas with the teacher as the teacher models and highlights items using the Teacher Presentation (TP) information and student input while students copy and highlight on worksheets. Students practice grammar skills through sentence and poetry writing practice and through parts of speech games. The course includes poetry writing as a method of mastering language skills. Literature reading is also strongly recommended. Students choose from a provided list of books with pre-assigned points from 4 to 24 (based on challenge level); students read a minimum of 48 points worth per semester. This system provides variety and encourages students to read frequently. A final recommended component is Mind Benders Book 3 (#003026) to be used to train students to think logically.

      The driving force of the course is contained in the two spiral-bound Teacher Instruction manuals. Teaching instructions and Teacher Presentation (TP) information of examples and suggestions needed to present the lessons, is provided in the spiral-bound Teacher Instruction manuals. The instructions and Teacher Presentation information (TP) in the lessons guide you step-by-step in the daily lessons and show examples and suggestions for the materials discussed. The teaching format is more of a traditional teacher-guiding-the-students format. You, the teacher, will guide the discussion about different writing skills: sentence writing, paragraph writing, and poetry writing. As the students brainstorm or suggest possible answers, you explain the lesson material visually by writing possible answers on a white board or paper while students copy onto the student worksheets. The program allows flexibility. Also, optional technology is provided in the Digital Additional Resources to present each lesson on the computer. The online TP files are interactive, allowing the teacher to type information directly onto the daily lesson's Teacher Presentation (TP) on the computer as the teacher and student discuss and the student copies onto the student worksheets (WS). This original “tech design” requires a computer with Adobe Reader. Internet and Adobe Reader are required to access the digital daily Teacher Presentation (TP) pages. Not techie? Don’t be dismayed! This element is not required or even necessary to teach the course in either a co-op or a typical home setting: good ol’ paper or white board will suffice. If you desire the digital full-page Teacher Presentation (TP) lesson materials for teaching using the computer, this material must be downloaded from the publisher. Grading rubrics are provided for all student assignments.  A thorough explanation of grading, rubrics for each of the 29 lessons, rubrics for poetry, and how to compile a final grade is provided.     Why did nobody tell me about this book before now??? Even just the first few chapters lifted loads from my shoulders and helped me understand so much about my reading.     In terms of high school credit equivalency (as before) Rosetta Stone is not "accredited" because it is not a school, but each level of the Homeschool program has a "Full Year Curriculum" lesson plan. If you follow that lesson plan, each level will be a 36 week program if you're not using the supplemental (suggestions in teacher materials) materials, or 45 weeks if you are (equivalent to 1 school year). Not all schools or boards will accept RS as credit, so checking to ensure it will be accepted is recommended.
