This sturdy learning toy reminds me of the bead maze my kids had many years ago. The rainbow-colored plastic beads teach simple addition and subtraction as you slide them up and over a wood barrier. The barrier is made of 2 removable panels: one side shows colored ovals that match the beads, while the other side shows math problems (add/subtract 0-10). You can play with the beads and slide them over the colored metal arches too! They make a fun sound that kids like. Place the barriers back and practice your math! The overall shape is triangular as you start with one problem and one purple bead, then 2 problems and 2 lilac beads, until you have 10 problems and 10 red beads. 12.5” long x3.25” wide x6” high. A great tool for the visual and kinesthetic learner, the Place Value Abacus can take some of the confusion out of teaching/learning place value concept. This set includes 3 stands (each holds 3 pegs), 9 pegs, 81 beads, and 9 sets of 0 through 9 number tiles. There is a small ledge on the front of each stand on which to place the number tiles. Place one tile next to each peg and children can make the association between the digit and the number of beads placed on that peg. Use each stand separately to practice up to 3 digit numbers or connect the stands to practice larger numbers. There are no decimals included with the set, but you could make your own and place them appropriately on the ledge to practice decimal places less than one (tenths, hundredths, thousandths). ~ Donna

Yes, you can buy an abacus as a math teaching tool, but with this kit you can build your own vertical abacus. The kit includes 90 colored cubes, 6 rods, 6 stands or bases for the rods, 12 number cards and a teacher guide. The bases slide together and there is a hole in each one for a rod to stand. The cubes are in a variety of bright colors and have a hole in the center for sliding onto the rods. The number cards have 6 holes at the back of each, so they can slide onto the rods, and then the front portion of each card has numbers or color patterns or number patterns or a simple addition problem to be solved by the student. A teacher guide is included with the set that offers suggestions for activities with your new vertical abacus – or "verticus." ~ Donna

The Rekenrek is a math tool that is similar to an abacus. The Rekenrek has only two bars, each with ten beads (five red, and five white); this is a great tool to help students understand early number concepts. You may be one of those folks that like the concept of using a helpful hands-on visual for math, but don’t know where to begin. Working with the Rekenrek offers 48 activities to help you best incorporate this math tool. There are activities in the areas of: subitizing, counting, cardinality, composition and decomposition of numbers, place value, and more. Activities start out very basic with counting forward and progress in difficulty as students better understand the math concepts involved. Each activity tells the number of students that should be involved (individual, pairs, group), materials needed (reproducibles from the back of the book and household items), an overview of the activity, and the standards met. Step-by-step instructions are then offered to complete the task along with tips to assess your student’s response. Activities include some fun activities like BINGO, concentration cards, and more. The book is 179 pages long, but 74 of the pages are reproducible blacklines for the activities.

If you’re looking for a fun way to introduce number concepts to early elementary students, the Rekenrek is an excellent hands-on option! ~ Donna

Abablocks are twenty sliding, wooden, numbered cubes on two 21" rods (ensuring that blocks will not rotate, just slide). They can be used with very young children to teach counting, skip counting to 5s, simple addition, subtraction, multiples and multiplication, division and remainders, and least common multiples. Kind of a cross between the number line and abacus, the blocks let children solve problems tactually and visually. To perform simple addition, they just "slide" the number of blocks over then look at the answer on the last block in the group. Missing addend? Slide the first group over, then see how many more would need to slide over to include the block with the sum. For subtraction, start with the number of blocks in the minuend slid over to the left, then slide the number of blocks in the subtrahend to the right. The last block remaining will have the answer. Missing subtrahend? Just slide over the number of blocks in the minuend and the number of blocks you'd need to slide back to leave the difference is the missing amount. Learning multiplication facts to 5's will be easy with sides of multiples of 2, 3, 4, and 5 painted (one multiple/color for each side of the cube). 2's are in blue, 3's in green, 4's in red, and 5's in yellow. To count by 3's, turn the abablocks to the green side. Every multiple of three will be in green (other blocks just in natural finish). How many 3s in 18? A cinch to see with this device. Just count the number of green blocks to 18. Divide 15 by 4? Go to the fours side (easier to tell groups of four here), push blocks through 15 to the left, then push groups of four to the right (and count) until there are no groups of four left. Answer: 3 groups of 4 and 3 blocks remaining. Blocks that are colored on more than one side (like 12) are common multiples of the numbers corresponding to those colors. I would describe this as a robust math manipulative; it is a handy, sturdy, no-loose-pieces teaching device for demonstrating many math operations and concepts to young children (with no choking hazard!).

Combine an abacus and over a hundred logic puzzles, and what do you get? Aba-Conumdrums. This set includes a brightly colored wooden abacus with seven rods, a write 'n wipe, spiral-bound puzzle book, and a dry-erase marker. After a brief explanation of the history of the abacus and how to use one, the puzzles begin! Puzzles all ask the player to determine a "secret number" based on math and logic clues that describe the arrangement of beads on an abacus displaying that number. For example: "Clue 1: The product of the digits is 12. Clue 2: There are more beads in the 10's place than in the 1's place." The abacus diagram (with blank rods) in the puzzle book and the wooden abacus are helpful tools to figure out the puzzles, and an additional blank reproducible abacus diagram is also included in the back of the puzzle book. Puzzles increase in difficulty throughout the book, and some of them are quite tricky by the end! Not only do these puzzles tickle the brain, but they're also terrific for increasing familiarity with the abacus, which is still commonly used in other countries. - Jess
