You don't have to have a degree in literature to discuss books with your child. Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone do such a wonderful job of laying out a plan that anyone can do it. This book is written to be a guide to begin a parent-child book club. It would also be a good discussion guide to use with your own children. The reading in this book is recommended for children in grades 2nd through 5th.

The authors teach readers how to be "book detectives" and find the story hidden within the story. Stories are written in layers, and readers need to peel them away by determining which characters fit the role of protagonist and antagonist, the importance of setting, identifying the climax, and point of view. They even spend some time looking for the deeper meaning within poetry. Using this approach will allow readers to unlock the adventure in every story.

A list of the books used by the authors in their reading groups is included. In second grade they include Mr. Popper's Penguins, Babe: The Gallant Pig, Charlotte's Web, Frindle, and various poems. Third grade includes Half Magic, The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, The Phantom Tollbooth, The Enormous Egg, and Bull Run. In fourth grade they read The View from Saturday, White Lilacs, The Giver, Animal Farm, and The Call of the Wild. The fifth grade list includes A Wrinkle in Time, Macario, Lost Horizon, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Time Machine. Along with the books used in their group they include some alternative selections. You are taken through some of the books step-by-step to illustrate how you can have discussions with your children in the manner suggested by the authors.

I was surprised at what an easy-read this is. I really enjoyed the book summaries, insightful discussions, and the humorous way some of the information is presented. This is a wonderful resource for those who want to help kids experience literature rather than just speed through books. 206 pgs, pb. ~ Donna

Based on the film, this game is sure to delight fans of the Wrinkle in Time story. Play Meg Murry, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O’Keefe as they travel through the universe trying to save Mr. Murry. The game is cooperatively played through five different location cards, with the objective being to travel through all the locations and unlock Mr. Murry. Each location has certain dice assigned to it, which represent characters such as Mrs. Who. Players roll the dice and decide which to use on their player boards – some dice help you out, and some affect you negatively. For instance, you may have to place a token on the Darkness Meter, which, when full, prevents you from winning the game. All player boards are a little different - the dice will have unique actions depending on which player uses them. Finally, players work together to assign dice to the center board. When placed, each player will use the die to follow directions for manipulating their “Enfolder”, which is a bit like a decoder ring. If the values on each player’s Enfolder are in line with the range for the location card, players can move on to a new location. When you reach home, you win! My favorite part of the game is the secret element. At the beginning of the game, a Mr. Murry’s Cell card is drawn. When a certain location is reached, players can use special glasses to read a hidden message with instructions to retrieve Mr. Murry. 1-3 players; 30 – 45-minute game time. - Janine

Reading good literature opens wide the windows of the world to students. A body of materials which will link the student with the general experience of mankind is provided in this book. This collection of titles is divided into ten units presenting experiences common to people in all times and societies. Certain works have been selected to provide as wide a scope as possible and while something will interest each reader, all of the titles in this collection will not be suitable for all students. Books such as Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, The Chalk Garden, The House of Mirth, On Golden Pond, The Chocolate War, 2001: Space Odyssey, The Great Gatsby, Great Expectations, and Ivanhoe represent the quality books from all spectrums that this book features. The book includes a reading level identification for and a short description of all 150 featured books and then provides tests for each book. Each test in this volume contains three types of questions. A set of objective questions will measure the student's understanding of the reading content., such as the basics of plot and setting. Five short-answer questions require more inferential responses about the larger ideas that the author wishes the reader to grasp. A final challenge essay asks the student to express observations on what has been read and to support those observations with information gained from the book, other books, and life. 100 More Great Books is constructed in the same format and contains seven units grouped in types of books: Adventure and Survival, The Maturing Self, History in Fiction, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and the Supernatural, Social Issues and Moral Challenge, Success and Achievement and Reflections of the Family. It recommends classics such as Pilgrims Progress, Jacob Have I Loved, Across Five Aprils, A Wrinkle in Time, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, Anna and the King of Siam, Tess of the D'Urbervilles and many more. - Rachel S.

I met the author of this book at a home school convention and explained that I had tried and failed several times to learn to play the guitar. He showed me this book, which claims to teach you how to play over 30 worship songs on the guitar in just 12 weeks. The book starts with the basics: how to hold the guitar, how to position your hands, which strings are which and how to tune them. It then presents three basic (and easy) chords and launches you into an easy arrangement of Amazing Grace. It is exciting to quickly be able to strum a familiar tune that you and your family can sing along with. The book continues to present a couple of new chords every lesson (week) with several more songs that can then be added to your repertoire when those chords are mastered. This book is also nicely sprinkled with Bible verses and quotes from Godly people. On 3 -...A-maz-ing grace, how sweet... ~ Jerry

"In 1814, we took a little trip, along with Col. Jackson, down the mighty Mississip." If you're like me that might be about all you know or can remember about the War of 1812. Our reasons for fighting it were obscure; what was accomplished is likewise vague. Wouldn't you like to know more? This unassuming little book proves there is a lot more; providing an overview of the war – causes, invasions, the war fronts, victories, and peace – and then a battlefield-by-battlefield guide. Looking at the various regions where war action took place, battlefield and historic sites are visited. Maps, aerial views, photos, and text – supplied in a colorful, heavy paper format – all help tell the story of each site. Particularly helpful are the Quick History inserts that serve as summaries. The Nearby and Noteworthy sections identify places you might want to include on a tour. The Don't Miss sections help prioritize. Written to be a handbook for those who want to tour the various sites and understand the bigger picture, the book, nevertheless, makes a good quick study of the war. It was important; it defined boundaries for two countries and impacted the history of three people groups – Americans, Canadians, and Native Americans. And, then, of course, it gave us our National Anthem. 128 pgs, pb. ~ Janice

This book does a marvelous job of recreating the trip to the New World on the Mayflower and showing exactly what it was like for the pilgrims. Using photographs taken aboard the Mayflower II (a true-to-life reproduction vessel built in 1957) with actors dressed in realist garb from the original voyage's era, the book shares the details of the journey. A little background on why the pilgrims were sailing, provisions they had to bring, delays and their eventual departure, the weather, various people who made the journey, the route taken and navigation of the time period, what daily life was like aboard the ship and special occurrences, how and where the pilgrims landed, and a little about what they did after they landed are all covered in an informative and interesting way. The accompanying photographs of the recreated journey really do bring the story to life and make it seem more real. This is an excellent supplement to your study of early American history and will really help students understand the details about this legendary voyage. By Plimoth Plantation (a living history museum that displays Mayflower II), 48 pgs, pb. ~Rachel

This is a brand new series from Alfred. The obvious question would be, "How is this series different from Alfred's Basic Piano Course?" Well, there are many differences, from minor changes in the way concepts are introduced to more significant changes such as the fact that this course uses a "non-position" approach (meaning that it doesn't rely on specific fingers for specific keys). Some of the things that make this course unique are: 1) Students learn to name notes without having to correlate them with a position. 2) Bass clef is introduced first, as many students end up weaker in this area. 3) Rhythm is taught using multi-note patterns rather than single notes. 4) Ear training and sight reading are both integrated into the course. 5) Parents are utilized as a key to the success of their child. For additional information, visit www.premierpianocourse.com to learn more about what makes this program different.

This course was developed to be comprehensive, appealing to students, and student, teacher, and parent-friendly. It features new music, attractive illustrations, and thoughtful organization. The lesson book is the main focus of the course. It covers note reading, sight reading, rhythm reading, and technical workouts accompanied by fun musical arrangements and colorful illustrations. An included CD holds all of the music at both performance speeds as well as slower practicing speeds. To complement the lesson book, there is a theory book which focuses on music theory, a performance book (also with a CD) offering additional music to play, and an at-home book which encourages parents to get involved in practice time by seeing what the child is working on and helping them review the concepts they've learned in between lessons. The books are clearly marked for simple use along with the lesson book. A set of flash cards to help with sight reading and learning music symbols and patterns is also included. All of the components are packaged in a vinyl, zippered storage case.
