Contemporary history resources frequently skip over the Christian heritage of our nation. In fact, I would say many of us were never taught that every state in our great nation intentionally acknowledges God in their constitution. Thankfully, this new reference book strives to set the record straight, teaching children tidbits of Christian history from each state along with directly quoting the constitutions of all 50 states in reference to God.

Organized by date of admission to the union, there are 3 dedicated pages for each state which covers an overview including the state bird/flower, song and motto and a ranking by area and population. Important historical dates, state facts and famous people along with weird or unusual attractions are included, along with the constitutional quote and Christian history or facts about each state. Also included is brief look at Washington, D.C. and a summary of the inhabited and uninhabited US Territories. Colorful pages, full color photos and illustrations, and loads of vital information for your history and geography studies makes this a must have resource for your home or church library. 160 pgs. pb ~Deanne

If you’ve considered purchasing the larger Word Teaser sets, this set is a great option to try first. This is a mini deck with 50 cards (rather than 150 in the larger). Each card contains a question regarding a U.S. state along with a hint on one side, and then information on the back. For example, “What U.S. state is only about 55 miles from the Russian border?” The hint is: “This state could easily hold Texas, California, and Montana in its borders.” Although there is just one question, the real wealth of information is on the second side. Each card becomes a “fast facts” card about a state, with the name, abbreviation, capital, population, land area, date it entered the union, nickname, and motto. With all these facts, this set is great for create-your-own games or supplementing a unit study on the United States. Cards are 2 ½” x 3 ½” and come in a storage box. For 2 or more players. ~ Ruth

Written in a similar style to the other Don't Know Much About books, this journey through the 50 states presents several questions and answers about each state as it is covered. Each page features one state (except for Texas, which of course needs two), with a small outline map of the state and other basic facts about the state, including the state bird and flower near the top of the page. Then several questions about the state are posed, some about more basic information about the state, and some involving more trivia-like information, such as "How many trees does it take to make a gallon of maple syrup?" for Vermont,"What is a keystone, anyway?" for Pennsylvania, or "Why were Nebraska's first settlers called 'sodbusters'?" for Nebraska. Other small interesting facts and state jokes are included as well. Also, a complete map of the U.S. is featured inside the front and back covers. Not a comprehensive look at each state, but an entertaining and informative read.

This maze book is filled with 50 intricate mazes - one for each of the United States. The cool thing about these mazes is that each is in the shape of a featured state. Capitals and large cities are labeled, and the actual maze is contained inside the outline of the state. Puzzlers must make their way from the state's capital to one of its major cities. The passages in the mazes are fairly thin and somewhat challenging, so older students won't be disappointed with overly-easy solutions. Answers are included at the end. 60 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel

These sturdy magnets provide a fun, hands-on activity for students to learn about the fifty states. Shaped like their individual state, each magnet includes information about state capitals, state birds and flowers, state flags and nicknames, the date each state was admitted into the union, and population numbers. Each colorful magnet is approximately 1/8” in thickness and sticks to any magnetic surface. Magnets are easily stored in a wooden box with a sliding lid. Please note that the sizes are not proportionate even though shapes are true, though simplified (Delaware is as tall as Texas). This allows all the information to fit on each state, but states will not fit together to make an accurate representation of America!  ~ Gina

This book is jam-packed with quality information and fun activities that will expand your student's understanding and awareness of America. The book is divided into three main sections. The first section gives some general election information and then devotes a page to every president from George Washington to George W. Bush. Each page lists the highlights of each man's life and term in office and displays a picture of the featured president. A "Show What You Know" section is included on each page with some kind of puzzle or fill-in-the-blank questions that can be answered from the information given. A "Find Out More" section urges students to research an aspect of the president that is not discussed in the book. Pages on six of the most famous first ladies are also included in this section. At the end of this section is a timeline where students have to order the presidents, compare and contrast them, and match them with wars, quotes, and important events. A presidential quiz is then given, testing all the information the student should have learned.

The second section of the book describes our government and how it came to be. Topics such as the American colonies, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, The Bill of Rights, the Senate, and amendments are just a few of the topics that are given their own colorful, fact-filled page. A "Show What you Know" section is also included on each of these pages. Quizzes on amendments and the constitution are included at the back of this section, as is another timeline to complete.

The third part devotes three pages to each of the fifty states. Interesting facts and statistics are listed for each state and a map of the state and its location in America is displayed. Each state also includes a colorful illustration of it's flag, bird, and flower. An activity page for each state helps students process what they learn, and they will enjoy the educational puzzles. The end of this section includes state riddles, several crossword puzzles, and maps for students to label. An extensive glossary and answer key is included at the back. An additional bonus to this book is the pullout flashcards that are included. For each president and each state, a colorful flashcard contains a picture on one side and vital facts and statistics on the other. This book is an excellent social studies guide for young Americans and requires little adult instruction so children can use it on their own. ~ Rachel S.
