Bingo lovers will enjoy this game that helps teach the shapes of the 50 states of America. Included are 8 large, single-sided bingo cards made out of glossy cardstock. The cards measure 8" x 10.5" and each feature 24 different labeled states (plus a free square), with alternating red, white, and blue backgrounds. A standard-sized card deck is also included with 50 state cards, which show a state with the capital marked and surrounding states as well. The cards list the state nickname, population, and total area. Players take turns drawing cards, reading the information if desired, and then marking the state off if they have it on their bingo card. The first person to mark off 5 states in a row (or another agreed upon amount) is the winner! Pretty basic, but kids will have fun playing and they'll be learning the state shapes and information without even realizing it. ~ Rachel

Winner of the prestigious 2017 Spiel des Jahres award (Game of the Year), this clever domino-style tile game is fantastic for families! Each player is the ruler of a small kingdom; but one crucial component is missing: land! Throughout the game, players take turns acquiring 1x2" "domino" tiles with each half representing a combination of grassland, wheat, forest, sea, or mountain. Tiles are then placed next to a player's Castle or a tile with the same landscape. When a player finishes his 5x5 kingdom, scores are counted: each type of land gains points based on its total size multiplied by the number of Crowns on the landscape. So the ultimate goal is to create the biggest landscapes with the most Crowns- but players who take better tiles (higher numbers) must pick later the following round, often preventing them from getting the perfect piece! The clever mechanics, simple premise, and colorful illustrations ensure that the whole family can get in on this delightful game! For 2-4 players; 15 minutes.

This fast-paced card game takes only about 15 minutes to play, and familiarizes players with food chains in four different ecosystems: Pacific Ocean, American Prairie, Amazon Rainforest and Sahara Desert. The cards represent plants, omnivores, herbivores and carnivores from each of those biomes, numbered 1-5. Each player can stack cards in order to develop a food chain in any two biomes at a time, but action cards like “Migration,” “Invasion” or “Scavenge” can disrupt play! After players have at least three cards in their biome stacks, they can “bank them” or set them aside for points. Play continues until cards are exhausted, and the winner is the players with the most points. For 2-4 players.

You are a racoon digging in the trash for treasure in this fun card game. Each turn you roll a die to earn actions, and after each action earned you must decide to roll for more actions or play it safe and use the ones you’ve already earned. But be careful! If you roll one of the actions a second time, you BUST and forfeit all your actions that turn. Once you decide to stop rolling, you perform the actions you earned, such as drawing from the trash pile, stashing your treasure, or stealing from another player (unless they have a Doggo or Kitteh card to stop you). Cards like Feesh and Nanners can be stashed for points or played to help you roll more actions or draw more trash. The player with the best stash wins! For 2-4 players. ~ Rachel

Pete the Cat is throwing a cupcake party, but Grumpy Toad stole all the cupcakes! As players, it is up to you to work together to get back all of Pete’s cupcakes by completing “challenges”. Challenges are dictated by the spot a player lands on, which is decided with a spinner. Challenges include naming an animal and imitating its call, naming a food, singing a verse of a song, thinking of a letter and word that starts with that letter, or acting out a charade card. If you complete challenges successfully, you get to collect cupcakes. You have to use a bit of memory, though – if you name an animal, say a word, or sing a song that another player already chose, you cannot collect a cupcake. Grumpy the toad also brings a bit of a challenge by taking cupcakes back if players land on his space. A very simple co-operative game for young kids with enough diversity of activities to be interesting. For 2-4 players ages three and up, 30 minute play time. - Janine

The title is a bit of a misnomer, as there is no actual crime solving to be had in this game. Instead, players collaborate to collect various pieces of evidence around town. However, you only have limited movement and there isn’t much time – you only have until the message cards run out! In addition, you’ll have to avoid or get rid of various hazards that flare up, like fires. Can you work together to collect the evidence in time? Or will the bad guy slip free? For 2-4 players; 30-minute game time. – Janine

‘Ello, gov’ner! London has been devastated by the Great Fire of 1666. Your job, along with up to 3 other visionary architects, is to rebuild it by your own imagined grandeur! The goal of London is to accrue prestige by developing your city in 3 sectors: Economic, Cultural, and Political. As you construct buildings and buy land, you accrue expenses, forcing you to build in moderation or take out loans. Once you’ve established a few buildings, you can then manage your city, gaining money, prestige, and other benefits from those cards. But inevitably intertwined with these grandiose achievements are another staple of London: paupers and poverty. As your sector of London grows, its poverty level increases. But it’s okay to be in debt, as long as your competing architects are deeper in the red… If you’re looking for a more historical, strategic card game in the same vein as San Juan, give this a try! For 2-4 players. 60-90-minute playtime.

Another excellent entry into the “science + fun” category of board games! The goal of Photosynthesis is to grow a thriving forest of trees by strategically planting them around the hexagonal “forest-to-be.” The soil is variegated from a tan exterior to a deep green interior; trees closer to the center earn more points when their life cycles end. Play begins as players plant two small trees of their own color along the exterior edge. Each turn consists of two phases: Photosynthesis and Life Cycle. The first rotates the “sun” and generates “Light Points” for each tree in direct sunlight (1 for small trees, 2 for medium, and 3 for large). But beware! As the sun travels around the board, every tree casts a shadow, preventing trees behind from earning points. So, while having trees in the middle is beneficial, it’s also risky, as opponent’s taller trees (and yours!) will often sap light points from those closer to the center. The second phase, Life Cycle, allows players to buy seeds, plant seeds next to their trees, and end the life cycle of large trees to collect Scoring Tokens. Once the sun makes 3 revolutions around the board, the game ends, and the player with the most points from Scoring Tokens and Light Tokens wins! For 2-4 players. 30-60-minute playtime.

They get “dragon dad” to help them gradually melt the column of ice with his fiery breath to loosen the sparkling gems. You stumble upon on ancient castle, blocking your progress. But what a coincidence! 3 other knights had the same idea, and they need to get through too… In Keys to the Castle, players compete to be the first knight to escape the castle by traversing its many locked rooms. Each player begins his or her turn by drawing cards. These cards are generally color-coded keys, but can also be a variety of helpful items. Players then play one of their cards, opening an adjacent door of their choice and moving – or locking a door behind them to slow down other players! Other helpful devices allow players to hacksaw through barred doors, set up padlocks to further sabotage their opponents, and even find secret passages to speed their progress. The first player to the opposite side of the castle wins! For 2-4 players. 10-20-minute playtime.

It is the early 1900's, and the archaeological business is booming. You and up to three other players begin artifact companies, organizing expeditions to go further than your predecessors to find rare items. Each turn, players roll dice and allocate them to cards in their possession, allowing them to buy, sell, and carry out expeditions. The game centers on four expedition types, each associated with a rare artifact (dinosaur bones, scrolls, statues, and gems) worth varying amounts. Once earned, artifacts can be sold to museums & private collectors, allowing players to buy new cards with special abilities and new expeditions types. The goal is to accrue the most Reputation by having a majority of your artifacts in museums, high-value cards, and additional underwater artifacts. Once a player reaches 20 points, the game ends, and final scores are tallied. Though nothing fancy, this game features a neat theme and is a perfectly suitable family game. 2-4 players; 45-60 minutes.

A seemingly infinite system of caverns has been discovered below your village, waiting to be explored! In this quirky fantasy game, you and up to three other players control small bands of villagers attempting to expand and improve their villages. Each turn, players use all available villagers to Build, Harvest, Train Villagers, and Explore. Those who dare to explore the caverns beneath the village face a variety of descriptive, story-like events, and the player chooses how to proceed. Some encounters are riskier than others, and failure will leave the player with wounded, exhausted villagers, and perhaps even a loss of reputation but success means riches and glory for your village! As players explore and earn money, they can Build houses and cavern outposts for bonuses, Harvest resources for trade, income, & Village Points, and Train new villagers. The game progresses until 7 rounds have passed; the player with the most Village Points wins.

One of the most unique games I've played, it flows like a narrative as players expand & explore: game events come from a 48-page encounter guide, filled with over 200 narrated events. Since players experience few each game, it can be replayed over and over without much risk of spoiling the encounters. The game additionally features beautiful fantasy artwork, limited competition, fun & balanced mechanics, and easy-to-follow rules. Nominated for numerous 2015 Golden Geek awards. 2-4 players; 75 minutes.

One of the most popular card games of the last decade, Citadels is a unique role-based building game. Each player begins with 2 gold and 4 cards for building. 8 “role” cards are available each game, each with a special ability. Each player selects a role. The lowest-ranked player goes first, revealing a card and using the special ability. Then the player gathers resources (gold or district cards) and “builds” a card if he has enough money. Some roles directly affect other players, causing them to lose turns or money, while others provide monetary benefits. Since every character ranked higher than you is hidden, you can never be quite sure who picked what roles! This adds a very intense psychological aspect to the game as players attempt to predict what others will do as they slowly build their cities. The game ends when 8 buildings have been built, and final scoring takes place. Unique buildings and 24 characters allow for almost endless replayability! This definitive version includes the expansion, 9 new characters, and 12 new district buildings. For 2-8 players; 30-60 minutes. Note that witches and various magical / fantasy elements are involved.

The last player to find the solution will lose a star token, and play continues until only one player has star tokens left. For 2-4 players.

Kicked out of Olympus for their mischief and mayhem, Zeus' children stumble upon a tiny city on a tall island. You play the part of one of the gods, assisting the workers to build the most prestigious building in your honor! The board is an empty 5x5 field resting atop a cliff; each player begins by placing their workers somewhere on the board. Players then take turns moving a single worker to an adjacent space and building a block, creating or adding onto an existing building. Players can move their builders up or down one level; whoever manages to move their worker onto the third story of a building wins the game! But beware: once a building reaches three levels, opponents can build domes atop these to block access, preventing players from winning. Adding a little depth is the addition of god powers from the whole Greek pantheon. The gods have permanent special abilities which improve building, movement, or even whole turns! Santorini is a delightfully simple building game suitable for children and adults alike. 2-4 players; 20 minutes. (Parents may want to note that two of the pantheon members, Eros and Aphrodite, are protrayed in semi-suggestive artwork, so you might want to remove these two cards before giving to children.)

What is more tempting to an adorable little bunny than a big, delicious, juicy carrot? Unfortunately, all the carrots grow on a different island from the bunnies--and the bunnies can’t swim! Fortunately, they are pretty well versed in bridge building! In this cute game of estimating, players take turns rolling the die to determine which building plank they will use, and then set a “stone” at the distance they think that plank will reach. Guess right? Move your bunny across the bridge to the stone? Overestimate? Your bridge plank falls in the water and you are stuck where you are. Underestimate the distance? You made it to the stone, but think how much further you could have gone! Another player may beat you to the biggest golden carrot! With sturdy, colorful wood and cardboard pieces and unique, simple game play, this game is one the kids will pull out repeatedly! 2-4 players, game play is approximately 15 minutes.

This simple game of strategy and luck challenges players to match the colored matchsticks on their cards to surrounding cards. Each player starts with 3 cards in their hand, and on each turn plays a card onto the play surface, collects a matchstick(s), and draws a new card into their hand. There are 6 colors of wooden matchsticks and each card contains 4 matchsticks in 2-4 of the colors. The more sides you can match to surrounding cards, the more wooden matchsticks you collect. The more different colors of matchsticks you collect, the more points you will earn! 2-4 players, game play is 10-20 minutes. ~ Megan
