What would it be like to be the slave of the great Spanish painter Diego Velázquez? To grind his paints, stretch his canvases, and clean his paint brushes every day? This fictional novel by Elizabeth Borton de Treviño gives a creative look into the life of Juan de Pareja, the slave of Velázquez. Throughout, Juan tells of his master's life through his own eyes - what it was like to watch Velázquez paint, to accompany him on the errands of the King, and to learn to paint in secret by watching his master's technique, as such work was forbidden to slaves. Little is known for certain about Velázquez and Juan's relationship, but the author does a wonderful job drawing from what is known to create this enjoyable Newberry Medal book with a bittersweet ending. 180 pgs, pb. – elise

Was America founded as a Christian nation? What role did diversity play in the early years of our country? What is the future of faith in our society? This fascinating DVD series explores these issues, and many more. This set contains six 30 minute episodes on two discs. This series surveys 400+ years of Christianity in America, including key people, events, movements and controversies from the Protestant, Catholic and Evangelical perspectives. Expert commentary and vivid illustrations bring the past to life in this well researched series. Bonus features include interviews, PDF printable transcripts and discussion questions. Questions vary from recall of information to higher level thinking and analysis (no answers included).

The first episode, "Faith in America", explores the history of religion in America from the Mayflower compact through the Declaration of Independence. It also covers the development of the consumer driven religion in the late 1700s, the circuit riders, and the "mega churches" of today. The second episode, "Many Mansions", explores the changes to America's landscape from alternative religions, including Joseph Smith's Latter Day Saints, the Shakers, and Jim David Koresh's Branch Davidian movement. The parachurch organizations and the Jesus movement are also briefly covered. Episode three, "Rebels with a Cause", surveys social issues and the role of faith, including a look at slavery, prohibition and the social gospel. Episode four, "Challenges and Change", takes a look at the impact of cultural changes on faith in America, including mass media: TV, movies, music, and the internet. Episode five, "Home Grown Saints", looks at ten influential Christians who changed the course of religious and cultural life in America. The final episodes explore eight key questions focusing on the role of faith in our culture and the global community, how people of faith should interact with others, and good stewardship of God's creation. An essential resource that inspires and motivates you to see the big picture impact faith plays in on our society. 2 DVDs. 180 minutes. ~ Deanne

Learn ancient history from a Bible-centered perspective. With short, interesting readings every day you will discover how history fits together. What famous Bible figure lived when the Trojan Horse was built? Who lived in North America around the time that Jeremiah wrote Lamentations? This historically accurate book tells you who walked the earth when and helps put their life in perspective around important events that happened worldwide during their lifetime. Unique historical photos are shown throughout, along with fun projects and timeline and mapping assignments. Another feature are the memory cards, which you add to every week to keep your facts straight. Quarterly reviews and semester tests are provided. Although this is intended for 4-8 graders, it is easily adapted to both older and younger students for an all-in-one history book as assignments are included for all grade levels. ~ Stephanie

This book covers it all, from the dawn of history right up to the year 2000, for all the major civilizations, all the rulers, and all the events in world history. Pages are filled with clear, interesting accounts of historical events, realistic reconstructions of scenes, and tons of incredible photographs. More than 100 charts and maps are included, allowing you to see exactly where events took place. Besides being an intriguing book to read, this is also your link to world history on the web. After reading about a subject, go online; every link leads you to a website where you can read additional information, watch video clips, play games, see photos, and use other unique website features to experience "virtually" all of world history. I was never much for history, but I wish I had this book when I was younger; these websites look really intriguing. For a study of the ancient world you can get virtual tours of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, a virtual walking tour of Rome and Athens, learn to speak Ancient Greek, write in hieroglyphics, take interactive tours of museums, explore the Valley of Kings in Egypt and learn about the pharaohs buried there and their tombs through photos and panoramic movies, view profiles of famous Romans and Greeks, explore a clickable Roman marketplace, and loads more. Some sights are interactive, where you can, for example, reenact the Battle of Hastings, and some are treasure troves of information, maps, timelines, and diagrams.

Note: The first 100 or so pages of the book discuss the "Prehistoric World" (starting 4,550 million years ago with the Big Bang and proceeding to 12,000 years ago when the last ice age came to an end). This section outlines evolution and likely contains objectionable material. However, the rest of the sections (Ancient World, Medieval World, Last 500 Years) are more factual and make up for the first. A colorful, captivating book. 416 pages. Stephanie

This beautifully designed timeline package is designed to accompany the History Odyssey program and includes four timelines: Ancients (6000 BCE - AD 500), Middle Ages (AD 500 - 1600), Early Modern (AD 1600 - 1850) and Modern Times (AD 1850 - Present Day). Although timelines are blank for the student to record events, they are printed in full-color and feature small graphics sprinkled here and there. To keep entries organized, each timeline is divided into seven category sections including: Men & Women, Inventions & Discoveries, Wars & Conflicts, Eras & Dynasties, Art & Literature, General Events, and Treaties/Agreements. Each timeline is five feet in length, features evenly spaced date lines, and can be displayed on a wall or hole-punched and placed into a binder. An optional Prehistory Timeline is also available if you would like to add a segment covering 2 million BCE to 7000 BCE (item #39409) Also, the optional timeline sticker pack is still available (#42770) which features 200 black-and-white stickers of famous people and events from 6000 BCE to present day.
