This book will help you to develop Christian character in your children. 13 units focus on honoring God, respecting others, telling the truth, self-control, kindness, obeying rules, forgiveness, responsibility, patience, loving everyone, apologizing, thankfulness, and sharing. Every unit holds 10-11 pages of stories and activities for that value. A poster for that trait starts each chapter, along with games, songs and a craft. Then there is a Bible lesson , such as the story of Jonah for "saying I'm sorry," and an application lesson - a real life situation story in which fictional children learn the lesson. A few activities are included for each lesson, such as following directions, puzzles, crosswords, and other practical, original exercises. Every unit ends with a "My Contract" page, where kids can decide to sign a contract to try and do better in that area. Although you can use this with just one child, I think it would also work well for a Sunday school class or group of children, as it is reproducible and several of the activities and games utilize "teamwork." ~ Stephanie

If you would like a story that gently reminds us that honesty is the best policy' you will enjoy this book. First copyrighted in 1954, this reprint tells of a young man named Shan, who thought a penny wasn't a big deal. Bringing used sacks back to the local store would bring a penny a bag a lot of money for that time. Shan knew that one of the sacks had a hole in it, but he wanted ten cents for ten sacks, so he could get a chocolate bar and lemon soda. There are consequences to our actions even cheating someone out of a penny, and Shan finds this out. A Penny's Worth of Character is a quick and easy read, but teaches a lesson we should learn for a lifetime. 60 pgs, pb. ~ Donna

Extremely in depth, the guide defines aspects of Christian character and development with emphasis on how character relates to relationships, responsibilities and attitude. It is a comprehensive study of character traits, elaborating on the traits in terms of “works of the Spirit” and “works of the flesh.” For example, the author discusses elements of good stewardship such as being constructive and productive, conserving, being reliable, and faithful. In contrast, bad stewardship involves being wasteful, destructive, unreliable, and unfaithful. The Guide uses Scripture (NIV and NKJV) as the basis for character instruction, while also preparing the child for a relationship with God. Chapters build on each other and include Honor/Dishonor, Active Obedience/Disobedience, Responsibility & Faithfulness/Irresponsibility & Unfaithfulness, Kindness & Generosity/Meanness & Greed, Nonviolence & Nonresistance/Violence and Patience/ImpatienceThe core of this curriculum is the Guide Book.  It is a comprehensive study of character traits, presenting both the positive and negative sides of each character trait, or lack of it. There is significant teaching in this book and it is meant for instruction by the parents or self-study for older children.

Can be used as a stand alone book or with other publisher components.

This book is a great source of character building stories. Three different character traits (creativity, diligence, and wisdom) are presented in four different contexts. First, a lesson is given using actual stories from the Bible. Then the same quality is presented in a story in school, home, and play situations. These were among our children's favorite stories when they were younger. The stories are interesting and the character qualities effectively portrayed.

Truly great teachers, like Jesus or Aesop, use parables or stories to get their ideas across. William Bennett, former Secretary of Education under President Reagan, recognizes the value of this approach in teaching character traits to our children. By compiling in one book a collection of classic stories, poetry, and hymns from a variety of times and places, he has made our job as parents a little easier. Working on self-discipline? How about the story of "Midas" or "George Washington's Rules for Civility"? Need examples of compassion? "The Good Samaritan" is hard to beat, but also consider "Androcles and the Lion," or Tocqueville's "The Influence of Democracy." Stories about courage? Choose from "Ulysses and Cyclops" or Patrick Henry's "Liberty or Death" speech. Other virtues illustrated include responsibility, friendship, work, perseverance, honesty, loyalty, and faith. A whopping 800+ pages of character-shaping works. Use alongside your school books, or Dad can read some selections after supper. An exceptional resource.

This activity book (workbook) is designed to help students uncover what they value most and help them self-define the morals and values that make them who they are. The reader works through twenty chapters which focus on character and morals. The first 8 provide a basis for the students understanding of himself: learning to think about ones own thoughts and feelings, interpreting mistakes, finding balance and journeying to reach for ones dreams, etc. Then, the remaining chapters address some specific morals: honesty; learning; respect; peace in nature (appreciation for and value of environment); boundaries; healthy relationships; consequences; forgiveness; humor; gratitude and diversity. Note: no rationale is suggested for why one should have these traits; there are no Biblical references or motivations listed other than those implicitly suggested by quotations from other children who have also worked through this book. Ultimately, the student himself will determine the reasoning. Each trait is briefly described; a criteria checklist is then provided to help the student evaluate his own ability in each area. The student then reads quotations from other kids regarding the topic. The next step asks the student to think about and practice the principles, imagining and drawing themselves using that principle. Finally, the student is asked to answer specific introspective questions. The lesson culminates in writing a final summation of the students view about this trait. These twenty summation statements then become the students overall mission statement.

To explain this practically, lets use the trait of Honesty. Some goal statements are "I will strive to be honest with myself and with others; I can count on myself and count on others". After reading other kids statements, the student is asked to think about honesty and practice it that day. Finally, the student is asked to write "Why its important to be honest; think about a time when you were dishonest; How did your dishonesty affect you and the person you lied to?", etc. Then the student sums up what he/she has learned and create a mission statement. After completing the book, a student will have developed a life mission statement based on the 20 statements theyve created in the workbook. Designed as a complete workbook with no additional items necessary. Note: no Biblical content. 196 pp, sc. ~ Ruth

Wisdom may be a tricky concept for young children to grasp, yet the Bible is very clear on how critical it is. Perhaps the best way to illustrate wisdom is to teach the outworkings of it in life. Author Ruth Younts has done a wonderful job of showing what wisdom in action looks like through these simple, attractive lessons on listening, obedience, contentment, orderliness, mercy, gratitude, respect, trust, truthfulness, patience, discernment and a dozen other traits. Both the student and teacher pages are in the one book, and there is plenty of instruction for teaching and applying each lesson already included. It is intended that a parent or teacher work through the lessons with the child, and the book can easily be used in either a family or a class setting. 91 pgs, pb. – Zach

As parents, we have a tendency to focus on our children's negative behavior -"Don't do this" or "Stop that" - yet how often do we take the time to explain the right behavior? Scripture instructs all of us, children and adults alike, to remove our sinful behaviors and exchange them for godly attitudes and actions in Colossians 3:12, "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience, bearing with one another…and forgiving each other."

Through the use of a visually appealing illustration, the "Put on Chart," the authors provide us with seven lessons covering each of the godly characteristics above: compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, bearing with one another and forgiveness. Each lesson refers back to the diagram by asking a question about what the child can observe in the picture. The character trait is then defined and related Scripture verses are shared. Related behaviors and examples are provided so children can look for opportunities to 'put on' the right behavior along with song suggestions, suggested prayer points and reasons to give thanks to God. An example of the lesson on kindness includes the question, "Why is the boy wearing shoes?" with the explanation that the word kindness in Colossians 3 means useful or employed. Being useful to someone else requires action. Kindness is further defined. Scripture verses included 1 John 3:18 and Galatians 6:10 along with others. We are then asked to read Ruth 2:1-16 and discuss four ways Boaz showed kindness to Ruth. A list of ways to bless and help others is included with ideas such as serving them before you at the table, encouraging with words, and many other ideas. Songs, prayer points and give thanks activities follow. While there is no time frame per lesson, I would suggest at least one week per trait to allow plenty of time to develop each godly behavior.

The laminated chart measures 10 ½" x 8" and displays a colorful illustration of a boy and textual information on the traits. Also included are reproducible paper dolls (one boy and one girl) made of white cardstock, making them easy for children to personalize. Like other Doorposts products, this is a practical and effective resource to equip parents in disciplining their children. PB. 36 pgs. ~Deanne

This devotion book makes it easy for girls to start at anytime of the year, allowing them to just pick up the book and start on today's date. Each devotion focuses on a woman of the Bible, discussing a character trait or other lessons girls can learn from each woman. It begins with a Bible verse, then tells a short story about the woman and discusses how it might relate to a girl's life in today's world. There are "thinking it through" questions on the side bar to help girls connect to the story and ponder on insightful questions. By showing how these women dealt with challenges involving jealously, being responsible, overcoming fear, dealing with anger, and much more, it provides girls with insight to conquer their own issues at hand. Every several lessons, there are also fun quizzes, games, and puzzles for the girls to complete. Having a one year devotion provides structure for girls, helping them to stay in God's word day by day. ~ Gina

Children today are desperately in need of real-life guidance and frequently look to adults or society for a moral compass. As parents, we recognize the teaching they are seeking will not be found in our society- media, classroom or even our culture. The best teacher for our children is us- their parents! Often, as parents, we may feel overwhelmed at the task before us, or possibly even confused as to where to focus our instruction.

As an author, children's ministry leader, and Dad, David Staal focuses on six pairs of critical truths and three foundational life lessons that every child needs to learn. Recognizing the truths he presents are best "caught and not taught", he provides real-world examples of those traits in action giving readers the tools designed to effectively communicate truth. The six truths he has identified as fundamental are: Believe that You Matter/Live Like Others Matter More; Appreciate those Who Serve You/Make Serving Others a Priority; Forget Unimportant Stuff/Remember Life has Consequences; Be a People Person/Be Your Own Person; Find Your Unique Fit/Find Out You Can Fail; and Always Speak Up/Always Speak the Truth . Each truth is presented clearly with real life examples which help parents recognize opportunities for teaching the truth within a casual context. Faith, Hope and Love form the foundation of character training and the final chapter is devoted to ensuring our children build their lives upon these three remaining things. Each chapter contains questions for reflection or discussion if parents would like to work through together or with a church group. This book is a valuable resource for parents, youth leaders, children's ministry workers and mentors who care about teaching children how to live in a way that honors God, fulfilling their God-given identities. 154 pgs, pb. ~Deanne

Having a close relationship with your daughter is very important. Every child needs someone to look up to, and a girl's mom is the ideal person to be a mentor to her. The better relationship you keep with your daughter, the more comfortable she will be asking you questions and talking to you about her life. This book was created to help bring you and your daughter closer together. Spending time together, of course, is an essential part of having a good relationship, and this book allows you to get together and discuss important aspects of a girl's life and pass along your Christian values. This book covers those hard-to-broach subjects including her changing body, relationships, friendships with boys, and love nature. You and your daughter can discuss the value of good books, life's work, ideals, the Christian life, repentance, trusting Jesus as your savior, and the importance of prayer. It will also help your daughter to develop character traits such as obedience, modesty, truthfulness, and a sunny disposition. The 32 chapters provide discussion questions for each chapter of Beautiful Girlhood, and also incorporate Scripture into your study with Bible activities and life applications. There are also inspirational quotes, writing topics, and blank pages for journaling so that your daughter can record what she has learned to make a cherished keepsake of your time together. ~ Stephanie

Sam is a fisherman’s daughter with a vivid imagination. Her father calls her stories moonshine. Every day she waits with her cat, Bangs, for a local boy named Thomas to come ask about her baby kangaroo (which Thomas believes is real). One day, Sam tells him that the kangaroo is out at Blue Rock, and Bangs goes with Thomas as he is sent on a wild goose, er, kangaroo chase. A storm comes in on a day that the tide is already supposed to rise early. While Thomas is saved, Bangs is nowhere to be found. While the book has a happy ending, it is through this tragedy that Sam learns the difference between good and bad story telling. A Caldecott Medal book, 35 softcover pages. – Laura

Have you ever stopped and wondered what it was like to have been a signer of the Declaration of Independence in Colonial America? We live in the greatest and most powerful nation on earth, one truly blessed by God from its inception. So what was the caliber of the men who shaped it? What did they think? What were their personal lives like? Now you have an opportunity to learn about the Founding Fathers in one of the most insightful and brilliantly crafted ways to date. Marilyn Boyer has written For You They Signed in such a way that it will leave you thinking you know the Founding Fathers personally. You will learn about some of their personal traits, life's events, and involvement in public service. The book is formatted in a unique way with the men grouped according to their respective states, just as the signatures were organized on the Declaration of Independence. At the end of each biography, there is also a list of questions for use in discussion groups. These would also make fine study questions in the classroom. Each signer has a portrait drawing and a box containing basic statistics on his life, such as where he was born, educated, and whether he was married and had children. In each biography is a chart of dates and descriptions of public service. Boyer has included many quotes from other writers, including comments from contemporaries of the Founding Fathers. At the beginning, you will find a brief description of the role Christianity played in the founding of the nation, along with quotes from famous people in our history and a typed version of the Declaration for your perusal. Included in the appendixes are character definitions, Patrick Henry's speech to the signers on July 4, 1776, "The Christian Nature of State Constitutions," and "The Christian Nature of America's Universities." Boyer crafted the book so that it can be used in five ways: a year's worth of character studies from a devotional perspective, a resource for a single mother, a program that the children can use on their own at their own pace, a group study, and for general reading. One of my regrets about this book is that I didn't have it when I was in school! 342 pgs, hc. – John
